Where do I put the transmission fluid back into my '86 gli ? Where the clutch cable ties in? or maybe where the sensor that screws into the top of the tranny is? I dunno exactly. Oh and how much exactly? thanks, I am sure this has been asked before-ERIN
P.S. plug to drain it sure was easy to find... it was just so tempting.

I really can't remember correctly but I think it's where the speedo cable enters the tranny housing. Like I said though I can't remember if this is right.
Can anyone help?

You can pour it in the speedo cable hole or pump it in check hole on the side of the trans.(17mm allen).Fill it till it comes out of the check hole.It holds aprx. 1.5-2qts.

On the end of the trans , remove the driver's
side front wheel to access it easily. You DO have
to 'top it off' by the speedo cable hole though !
Older cars do not have to be 'topped off' .

The trans fluid as to be level with the opening
on the side of the tran (17mm Allen) . Put the 17mm
Allen bolt back in and, on most A2 like yours, add
the right amount at the speedo cable hole.

...Yup!...take the speedo cable out(one bolt holds the plate down).....and I used exactly two Quarts of Trans oil
...I filled mine with "Redline"MTL".....what a difference!!!

I put redline in my '92 Rado tranny, but will it really make that much difference in my '86 GLI? that already grinds second. Thanks guys for the input.

YES
Does it always grind? Or just when cold?
In any case it's gonna help it. If just when cold it very well may eliminate it completely. It did for me on my original transmission (2 ago, heh)

It grinds when I shift quickly from 1st to second. Especially from higher RPMS... I am thinking its the typical VW 2nd gear syncros going. If I pause ever so slightly in between shifting it doesn't crunch. thanks a bunch-ERIN

Definitely do Redline.
