OK, so to you guys it's not a big deal, but as a girl who has always been told that this is a guys sport, I'm out to prove them wrong!! Last week end I changed my own plugs and wires and my car is still running
. Hopefully by the 2nd week in March I'll be able to attempt to put my exhaust on. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: I did it myself!!!!!!!!! (DUBMON)

It may seem like it should be easy, but there are things that can go wrong. If you get those wires mixed up all heck can break loose.
Like you, I'm new to this DIY stuff. My Dad did a lot of my stuff before he passed away, and nowadays I have my great Vortex friends to help me with the bigger stuff (Eric, Eric6, VAG Parts Bin and DUBMON come quickly to mind as friends who have always been a great help). I recently replaced my door locks on my own in 30 minutes. I was quite proud of myself. The moral of the story is to take the little victories and move on to bigger things. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I'd say it's the most important thing.
Always make sure you have the proper tools for the job. Like collins said....things CAN go wrong.
Make sure, you make enough time for the project. I've found that people often get too exited when they get new stuff and always want to put it on right away. Something goes wrong cause the were not prepared or didnt make sure they had everything and thier cars ended up sitting or something ended up breaking.
Final thought.......take your time. Don't rush it.
I am an idiot when it comes to these new cars. All my Rabbits I had no problem. Wasnt into modding cause I was young with no money. But now that I have resources, I can do my homework and make the best of what I can myself. It's a wonderfull felling finishing and it actually working...
.
There would be now way at all I would of tried these thiing without the Vortex. There are people on here with abundant info on VW's and you can just tell by these replies that people are willing to take the time out to read and help. There are people on here that make no sence and are asses.....but in life, we have them everywhere. Take things with a grain of salt around here cause people are always playing but seem serious. We have to remeber we are staring at a monitor and actually face to face so you can't see the true emotions/body language. You will see diffrent, conflicting suggestions and posts. Read s much as you can and ask what ever you need to. Don't assume people are always right with what they post....you gotta research too...

Welcome to the Tex.....Where you can get great info and have some fun...

Re: I did it myself!!!!!!!!! (DUHSHET)

BTW, this isn't just a guy's sport. There are a lot of women in this and the other Forums who know just as much or more than most of the guys in here. And they own some pretty sweet cars, too! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Welcome!

Congrats vdubchik...its always fun to hear how excited others get about any car-related activity. There is a lot of satisfaction in knowing that you can have the patience to see things through to the end. Great work!

OK so my B/F was close by while I was doing the work, but he just guided me in the right direction, he never actually touched anything!
I did have the use of all his tools and he has quite the collection he is also big into cars( fords mostly but I forgive him for that
--he hasn't yet seen the light). Thanks for all the support

Dominance isn't such a big thing when modding your car. Experience is where it's at. I see a LOT of posts here illustrating every day the males that don't have the experience to work on their own cars and end up making things worse or providing bad information.
I agree with DUHSHET but I also highly recommend you get the Bentley and/or Haynes shop manuals. These are tools and are essential in helping you perform custom and stock work. I'm still amazed at the people who insist on doing their own work yet don't have a manual
They are not expensive and answer so many repeated questions. Want to fix your door locks?, get a Haynes; want to compare wiring diagrams between the GTI and a Jetta?, get a Bentley; etc.
Remember to do the small stuff and work your way up. Have confidence but also have the guts to realize when you are in over your head and need help. Stop, put it back together, and drive to a shop. It may not be fun but it could end up being less expensive resource-wise and we've all had to do it at one point or another during our learning curve.
Congrats and good luck w/the rest of your endevors (sp?)! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
