I had a red '85 GTI (all were 8 valve that year) that I really liked until some salesman clobbered it taking an exit from the far lane. For some reason I never took a picture of it (it predated cell phones by a long way) but it was just like this:

A friend had a 1985 MR2, which was an absolute joy to drive. His was white and looked juuuust like this one, down to the lack of sunroof:

He autocrossed it and did quite well regionally with it.
