The Mustang outsold the F-cars for several reasons. First, Ford did a better job marketing the Mustang than GM did. Second, Ford would update the Mustang every two years with something new. GM waited twice as long to update the F-Cars. Third, the Mustang was not a hatchback. Hatchbacks, until recently, were out of favor. Finally, the Mustang was simply a more comfortable car to drive. While this does not matter to the speed freaks, most Mustangs and F-Cars sold are the V6 models.
This is why I don't see the new Altima as such a big threat to the Camry and Accord. For most people, speed has never been the primary reason to buy a car. Style, sophistication, price and other factors contribute more to the car buying decision. Just take a look at our Dubs. They are not the fastest cars in their respective classes, but we still decided to choose them over faster models.

how many camaro commercials did ya see? i hardly ever saw them. They did advertise the trans am, and the commercial was kind of cool, the one at the stoplight....
The cars AREN'T CRAP. The new SS camaro, does EVERYTHING well, including brake. The new SS's stop shorter then MOST sports cars, even some of the high end cars. Not to mention, for under 30K, you could have a car in the low 13's stock. I witnessed, an ABSOLUTE BONE STOCK, 2001 T/A, AUTO, run a 12.87. Thats incredible. 12's! STOCK! AUTO!
I still have my camaro, and love it. I don't think i'd sell it. Maybe if it were stock, but definately not now.
The camaro is a big car. It's not like driving, well, anything else for the most part. I loved my car all the time, it brought me great times. They even get good mileage if you leave them stock (something that is next to IMPOSSIBLE to do), hell, the LS1 gets over 30 mpg on the highway, something even a good V6 has trouble doing *ahem, VR6*.
People knocked the camaro/firebird, because they were euro/handling snobs, like we see all over this very post. If they actually took the time to drive the car, i don't see how they wouldn't like the good aspects of the cars. Yes, the rattle, squeak, and have some problems. Wouldn't that describe VW too?
Hell, my 2000 gti glx, built in germany by hans and frans, had almost as many rattles at 13K miles, then my 53K 95 camaro has. And the vw didn't have NEARLY the power to deal with as the camaro did.
i dunno why the mustang outsold the camaro, i always liked both cars, but when it came time to buying one, brand new, i simply couldn't find a reason why i'd rather have the stang. I wanted performance, and the camaro had it beat in every category. I ran a 13.8 stock, put a few things on it, and had it in the low 13's... It was a great car!

I love the looks of the Mustang! More variants. Those of you who diss it do us all a favor and go beat one. Your local SCCA has a website post me a link with your name showing me the FTD! faster then any other Mustang that day?

Maybe it is your least favorite car ever because you don't know anything about it.
1) There is no "e" in Camaro.
2) A Camaro Z28 gets close to 30 mpg on the highway. I would hardly call that gas guzzling, especially when you consider it has 300+ hp and boatloads of torque.

First off, I love mine There isn't a single new car on the market I'd buy over a Camaro (unless I had a ton to spend, then I'd get a ZO6).
The major points have already been stated. For one, the Mustang has a feeling of nostalgia to a lot of people. To them its a true American sports car. It makes them think of very fast race cars and such. Of course, the original Mustang wasn't a sports car, it was a sporty car. It had sporting pretensions. It was a few years later when it finally got the power (and suspension) to back up the image. Since say, 1994, the Mustang has been a sporty car for the most part, it was the diluted for the masses pony car. Fbodies were the pony car. They were loud, long, mean, swooped back, harsh riding, you sat low in it, etc. If you like it, great, and if not, tuff bosoms.
It would be interesting to see which sold the most, V8 Fbodies or V8 Mustangs. I think the sales of those would be much closer. Its just there are a TON of V6 Stangs sold to 16 year old cheerleaders who want a "sports car." And Fbodies dont have any luggage space either, and no real trunk. I really hope the next generation Camaro is more like the first or 2nd gen which had a trunk, and not like the 3rd and 4th gens.
