Ok I'm 16 years old. I live in a fairly rich community full of shallow people and expensive things. I have a couple friends who like me, beleieve this town is a false "Pleasantville." I have a Golf, which was owned by my grandpa before he died. He was like 86 with glaucoma in one eye and a glass ball in the other (eye socket, that is). His son took away his Jetta, so he went and bought a new Golf. He died and my Grandma got the car; basically the only thing his family would let her have. My Grandma transfered the title to my father last January. I turned sixteen this past summer and the car has been basically considered my own. Here's a little synopsis of my recent history:
7.25.01 - I turn 16 and get my driver's license
7.26.01 - My dad has me drive somewhere with him. I drive across some railroad tracks and a bright light flashes at us. The lights on the crossing had started flashing about 2.5 seconds ago.
9.27.01 - I make a u turn in front of my school. The girl who was behind me hit me while I was in the middle of the turn. Repair bill: approx $1500. We made an insurance claim and paid our $500 deductible, the girl eventually reimbursed us.
10.??.01 - My dad gets an envelope in the mail from the Naperville Police Department. Inside is a letter and a $500 ticket for failure to obey a railroad crossing signal. The letter contains photos from every angle of when I drove accross the railroad tracks. The ticket is for my dad, because he is the owner. He takes 50 hours community service and leaves it at that. We're doing the 50 hours together. He's become the laughing stock of his in-laws.
1.5.02 - I am driving through my friend's neighborhood and have to turn around in a court (no more U turns for me). I am driving on fresh snow. I go slow through the court (approx 10mph) and when the court becomes a circle I turn the wheel and the car goes straight. I put the brake pedal to the floor and the ABS kicks in. I eventually (5 seconds later) slid into someone's mailbox and knocked it over. They weren't home, so I called the police non-emergency number. I was given a ticket for "too fast for conditions" and also settled the mailbox cost with the homeowner. I take the ticket to court.
1.30.01 - I am leaving ACT class. It is fresh snow again. All of us kids were pulling out of the parking lot one by one. It was the type of thing where you let go of the brake and idle to move forward, apply the brake to stop. Well I let go of the brake to move up, apply it and slide. I hit the Blazer in front of me. He has no noticeable damge, my front license plate is bent. We leave it at that. I never tell my parents.
2.6.02 - Court date for mailbox ticket. My original $80 fine plus court costs became $50 court costs included. I have court supervision for one year. Or 3 months, I forget.
2.9.02 - I go to the school's car club where we have been transplanting a Chevy V8 into an Astro van. I don't know much about how cars work, so I basically watch. I decide to take off my front plate and pound it back into shape. I pull my car up outside the shop, remove the plate, but decide to bang on it at home, so I put it in the back seat. I go into the auto shop to talk. 5 min later the teacher is outside saying "were you guys screwin' with this truck, cuz it's rolling into this VW." I go outside - the truck is up against my car. The passenger front fender is bent and scratched a little. I decide I wasn't offering any help and I go home.
So. It's been a little over six months and I've had three collisions and two tickets. The funny thing is, I've always wanted to be a good driver. I can parallel park in spaces 1 foot longer than my car, but I still have more 'altercations' than all my friends. And most of them have been driving for almost a year. But it really sucks because of all the things I've ever done in life, I don't think I've wanted or been more excited about anything besides driving. Yet I seem to be a horrible driver. Go figure.

When, in your past life?.......you're 16. You definitely need more practice, on dry pavement and in the snow.
I should add, that everyone has small driving incidents- don't feel too bad, you will get better with time.

One question. When you hit this guy's mailbox, why did you call the police. Couldn't you just settle this with the guy, and that's it ?
Oh, and to the subject. I don't think you're a bad driver at all. For the railroad incident, I guess it's just bad luck (that's in case you really couldn't stop when the lights began flashing). And the other two incidents are involved in snow. As this beeing your first winter on the road, I'd suggest taking it easier, just to learn the limits of you and the car. Brighten up. Everyone has these little incidents once and a while.

You're not horrible, just inexperienced. At least the thought of being less than great behind the wheel has occured to you. In that way, you have one up on 85% of new drivers. Carry on........
p.s. Stay the hell away from my Corrado please

Probably. But even if I just left a note, their next door neighbor was a detective, and radioed in to make sure they were sending an officer (after I told him I called). So I think the police might have found out anyway.

If you or your parents can afford it: get snow tires. Some Blizzaks or something of the sort. This should keep your ice and snowy condition problems to a minimum.
At least you realize your faults and are trying to correct them. I don't know if I would be much better in the snow myself. All I can say is, be glad your accidents have been minor and that nobody has gotten hurt. Try to be more attentive, and keep practicing. Maybe ask your dad or mom or somebody to be with you when you drive, and point out what you should be looking for, your driving faults, etc. But perhaps, until you get snow tires, you should stay away from driving in the snow until you can get more practice. Have your folks or an older adult take you into a parking lot and teach you.
I'd like to think of myself as a pretty attentive, courteous driver, but I would probably be terrible in the snow: because I've had no practice.
Good luck!

That accident in the snow doesn't sound like it was your fault if you were going 10 mph, I agree with the previous post, you need snow tires.
You're inexperienced and the key is you realize you're not the best driver out there so you'll be willing to learn from others and improve. Some people who may be better than you now might not get any better if their attitude is that they're great drivers and they couldn't learn from someone else.
Good luck.

Michelle,
Don't even get me started on tires. I have been into the local dealer since November regarding my crappy Goodyears and the TSB to replace them. They're jerks and won't call me back and say that they don't need to be replaced, so I eventually stopped trying. I can apply throttle very lightly in snow and rain and the tires will still spin off the line. But that still doesn't excuse the driving.
I'm thinking maybe I just drive too much. I drive every day, usually at least 20 miles. The friend who was in the car said I'm the best driver he knows, but I still don't think I'm that good. I just don't speed; and thats for fear of getting caught. Naperville cops suck, as you can see from the mailbox incident. Oh well

Erg so my car's rear bumper cover and wheel well has been replaced, the front plate is bent, the front bumper cover has mailbox paint fused to it, and now the front fender is FUBAR. Poor VW. And I take such good care of it otherwise

In addition to what everybody else said:
Maintain situational awareness. Check your mirrors and blindspots as often as possible with the goal of knowing exactly where everything else is in relation to your car. Maintain a large distance not only in front of you but behind you if possible.
As for Blizzaks? Those tires are garbage in anything except ice and snow. Nokian NRW's are better and cost less.

I know what you're thinking, but with time, things should improve. My car has been in the body shop way too much. I've gotten to the point of thinking it attracts bad luck. Listen to this:
Sept. 2000-Car gets shipped to dealer. When being backed off the truck, a wrench is dropped on the grille. Car goes to shop before I even got it.
Jan. 2000-Took my eyes off the road, went into the other lane, overcorrected, landed in a ditch. New bumper cover, chin spoiler.
May 2000-In a p!ssed off mood, I pulled too fast into my garage. Took out the passenger side quarter panel on the side of the garage, $600 in damage.
November 2001-My father was late for a meeting, backed out of the garage rapidly, hit my rear bumper, cracked it in half.
June 2001-Put on new front end w/ MK4 lights/GTi grille-hood. The day after it was on, my friend backed into me trying to make a u-turn. Grille, bumper need repainting.
January 2002-My hood gets repainted in December. Three weeks later, a snowblower gets backed into it. Inch long scratch down to bare metal.
Believe me, I am sick of it. Don't worry, experience will help. I'm only 20 myself , and as you can see, I too tend to think I don't belong in a car.

Totally know where you're coming from. But my problem is, even if I don't think that, my parents do.

Well, then show them you're interested in learning. Ask to go to a driver's school, not Sears, but a real-world, hands on driving school or class. Find out if there are any offensive driving courses, or any "get to know your car" days at a local race track where a professional driver instructs you in techniques such as threshold braking, getting in and out of skids, slaloming, etc.
If you show that you are willing to learn and that you care, they may be willing to help. And knowing your car and yourself better can bring nothing but good things.

Re: I just realized that I'm a horrible driver. (Andrman)

I was backing a handi-bus down my street this summer (yes, I drive the short bus
) and I heard a *thunk* and didn't feel anything. I got out and took a look, and my neighbors' mailbox was flat out on the lawn. I thought about it for a second. I was in Worcester at the time, where, like every other city in the US, your mail gets delivered right to the door. These people had put up a "rural" mailbox on the post because they thought it looked nice or something. It had been irritating me for some time. So, I picked it up, balanced the post on what was left of the base, and took off. I decided I had done them a favor.

hey man, first of all i am just going to repeat what everybody said - you are just 16 and just began driving, take it easy, practise and you will be a good driver. you have tens of years of driving in front of you so just chill and take things slowly and you will be more skillful and comfortable.
not everyone (more like 99.999% of population) can be an F1 driver. but with practice, experience and active awareness everybody can become a good driver.
secondly the maturity demonstrated by your writing and your ways of dealing with things is well beyond your proclaimed years (16) - which is a very good thing and i congratulate you for that. as everybody knows growing up is not easy and can be pretty stressful at times, sometimes for no reasons at all, so i am just glad to see that you are handling it alright.
oh, and try to learn manual sometime, maybe when you begin to feel comfortable with driving on road, i am sure you will like it.

Re: I just realized that I'm a horrible driver. (Andrman)

ya your just inexperiened everybody makes a mistake. But for one if I were you I'd not drive in snow again until you get more experience in it in an empty parking lot!
When I had my first car when I was 16, my 86 Jetta I bumped into my taurus turning around in the driveway. I told him but no damage to the car and he never spoke of it again.
I've been rear ended twice, once at a stop light another time at a stop sign. I've learned to always have my brake lights on when I'm stopped.
Then more recently while backing out of the driveway in my dad's van, 2000 Caravan Sport (actually it's a company car) I hit the drivers side mirror on a tree and broke part of it, and cracked the housing. Whenever he gets it fixed he's going to give me the bill. It's been about a year now since I did it but it hasn't happed yet.
So ya we are all learning while we drive.
Experience helps. I drive 60mi a day 5 days a week in which I'm also learning some do's and don'ts.

I learned it a little over a month ago in my friend's '93 Ranger. I've always preferred it, but never really had an oppurtunity to use it. I am considering converting my car to standard, becuz my parents wont let me trade in for a '00 Golf w/out automatic option. Oh well.
And I think they know I want to be a good driver. I actually have video tapes of me in a parking lot and all they did was get pissed at me. They know I want to be a good driver. They're just scared ****less of me behind the wheel.

all parents are mortified of their kids doing something they don't understand, nature of all things.
