i know this has been beat to death! 1.8->2.0 yes/no questions

i usually hang in the rocco forum, but i am very very interested in doing the swap. so i thought i would ask you guys.
Simple yes / no questions.
1) 2 types of bottom ends. ABA (bubble block) block, and 2.0l 16v block or are these the same?
2) 2.0 (and 1.8) uses 82.5mm pistons. i want to bore it out to 2.1 with 83mm pistons. Is it worth the extra $$$? i plan on a full rebuild anyway.
3) new items: stretch head bolts (factory will do), waterpump, oil pump, timing belt, intake gaskets, head gasket (2.0), belts, and oil.
i will be using my 1.8l pnp head.
what could i expect to pay for:
83mm pistons
82.5mm pistons
block/rods/crank/pistons (longblock)

thanks a heap guys! i am ready to do the swap. i am thinking about cashing in my 120hrs overtime!

Re: i know this has been beat to death! 1.8->2.0 yes/no questions (rockin16v)

I did a stock 2.0 swap, nothing fancy. The difference is like night and day. If you want to spend the extra cash for more displacement, go for it. In my opinion, 100 or 200cc isn't worth the extra bucks. You could get yourself a sweet camset for the extra cash you would spend on more displacement. Find a good used 9A block and rebuild it.
Re: i know this has been beat to death! 1.8->2.0 yes/no questions (SII16V)

The 2.0L ABA block and the 2.0L 16V block are not the same, as the ABA is an 8V. My understanding is that using a 16V 2L block (that is the 9A block, right?) with a 1.8 head leads to very high compression. The pistons are different between a 16V block and a 8V block. So sticking a 16V head onto the 8V block would lead to very low compression, right?
If it is possible to put 16V pistons into the 8V block, and these are your plans, then I look stupid, and should shut up now

There is another 2.0L block, and it is also an 8V block, from an Audi, and it is referred to as the bubble block, because of the bubbles on it to make up for the increased displacement. It is the 3A block. The ABA block is from the A3 4cyl gasoline rides, and it is referred to as the tall block, because it is 16mm taller than the 1.8 block, due to the longer rods and stroke. I'm not sure if the Audi block gets its extra 0.2L from the bore or stroke, but I think the bore.
I had a ton of stuff to replace when I did my ABA swap, but all my stuff is 8V, so my list of stuff probably wouldn't match your list....but I got exhaust studs and nuts, injector seals and inserts, vac lines for some rips I found, shifter bushings since it was out, clutch, PP, lightened flywheel, a new exhaust since I changed manifolds, rear crank seal, I/S seal, tranny mainshaft seal, pushrod seal and bushing, TO bearing, a longer ABA timing belt, a 2.0L 16V head gasket, block off plate for the breather on the front of the ABA block, a dist adapter ring....hey...
If the 16V dizzy is in the head sideways, what would you do with the hole for the 8V dizzy in the 8V blocks?
...anyway, I changed heads with my swap too, so I had all kinds of coolant o-rings, valve seals, guides, etc, that you probably won't need.
I have no idea about the piston prices or anything like that, but I can tell you I paid $350 for a complete (sans dizzy) ABA 2.0L 8V engine with 47K miles on it. I plan on doing another 2.0 swap, and the next engine will run me $325

Hope this helps!

Re: i know this has been beat to death! 1.8->2.0 yes/no questions (Broke)

i heard the oil passages were a bit differbnt in the 8v block compaired to the 16v. not true?
also, i have some pretty agressive cams in there, and totally done up 1.8 i just want more NA power. maybe turbo down the road, but for now, i just want a 2.2 or a 2.1L 16v
hey thanks again guys! i am sure i am not the only one who didnt know this stuff.

how much do you think i should offer someone with a longblock (less than 100,000 kms) no head, just longblock. i think its a 9A

I've seen them going for $400-$500. Try your local wrecking yards.

1. No, ABA is 8v, 9A is 16V. 2. 1.8 is 81X 86.4, 2L is 82.5 X 92.8. 83 bore gives 2008cc, still 2L, you need bigger bore and/or stroke for 2.1. BTW 8V head bolts to either 8 or 16V block but that is another issue.

Hi Vwpat,
83x92.8 = 2008 cc's, 84 x 92.8 = 2057cc, 84.5x92.8=2082cc
You need to use 16v head bolts for a 16v head.
A 1.8 16v head has the same chamber volume as a 2.0 16v head.
And we believe that the 2.0 16v head is superior in that it will produce a more broad powerband.
Good Luck
Jeff

Yeah, I was thinking 83.5. Not sure what you mean on the rest, he was asking if an 8V head will bolt to a 16V block.
Re: i know this has been beat to death! 1.8->2.0 yes/no questions (J. Moss)

isnt 84.5 a bit much of a bore?
i heard 83.5 is pushing it.
Jeff, i see in your sig you guys sell/make em? what is the price difference between stock (82.5mm and 84.5mm) piston kits. i am looking for high comp (close to stock, but i might shave the head downa bit to raise it.)
in your (everyones) opinion, is 84.5mm bore too much for a daily driver? i want power, but i also want it to start up and run smooth (as it can with agressive cams that are in there right now).
Also, does anyone know of any decent
9A blocks/crank/rods around NW washington/south western BC?

Hi Rockin16v,
We have been using 84.5's for almost 10 years now. You need to use a 9a and we like to have it sonically tested. If everything (it usually does) checks out it will be fine.
As far as shaving the head.. We prefer to build it into the piston if we have a choice.
Jeff
