You can check your VIN#. If it starts with WVW, then it's made in Germany. Most likely your 88 Golf was made in Westmoreland, PA. Check your driver side door jamb. It should say where it was made.

Your VIN should read 1VW--------- if it was built in PA (as most Golfs of that era were).
No VW VIN# used P for Pennsylvania, Tbird.

P (depending on the year) is either Brazil or Mosel.

Maybe for the factory code but not country, Brazil is 9VW...

This is nice. Look for digit #11 in your VIN and compare it to this table to see where your car is made. VWs made in Belgium, Spain and Portugal still start the VIN with WVW, so that is not a certain tell-tale.
