I need some clarification please....

Ok my buddy has a 2002 Jetta 1.8T and he's planning on getting H&R Race springs. Does he need a new front sway bar to avoid any rubbing or is that just for the VR6, We've been getting a lot of different answers and need to be 100% sure before we do it...Thanks

Re: I need some clarification please.... (Dubster10)

the swaybar rubbing/banging only applies to those that have the H&R Coilovers. Correct me if im wrong.
Re: I need some clarification please.... (Dubster10)

Hit and miss issue. You had better put one in to be 100% sure that you won;t have problems later on.
Re: I need some clarification please.... (Wakaru)

usually race drops require a sway bar replacement.
anything over 1.5" should do the same (coilovers included)
Ok well then it sounds like we should replace it just to be safe? Has anyone put the H&R Race on the 2002 1.8T Jetta without replacing the front sway bar?? Thanks again

Re: I need some clarification please.... (Dubster10)

Apparently, VW changed some of their specs in mid/late 2001 models, and that is why H+R suggests replacing the front sway bar for clearance. I for example bought my 2001 Golf in late 2000. I installed coilovers and I don't have any issues whatsoever with rubbing or anything of that nature.
If I were you, with a 2002, I would change the swaybar...
Re: I need some clarification please.... (burdelli)

I thought that with any MkIV, if you lowered the car more than 1.5" you had to change the front sway. If this is not so for my car and I don't have to change my sway when I put in my Eibach sportline springs which lower 1.7", then I may not get the Eibach sways. I don't drive hard enough to warrant the new sway and was only going to change it because I was told it wouldn't clear. If anyone with a 1999/2000 has changed their springs and not had to change their sway, please let me know so I can save money (and the time it will take to change the sway).

Alright, I am the one getting these springs and I saw on a thread about a week ago , that you only had to get the swaybar if you have the VR6 not the 1.8T. I saw a few people say this, and I know that I should eventually get it, but is it OK to not have one for now.
Anyone with a 100% answer!!!!
Re: I need some clarification please.... (RVs021.8T)

Look, I have H&R Cup kit, a 2.0" drop and for the first 9 months I did not have rubbing issues, but after that it was pure shaft grind.
Re: I need some clarification please.... (Wakaru)

So, thanks I hear what you are saying. Basically I could just get the springs, and then a month later order the swaybar and be ok.

Like everyone else has said, I would get it to be safe.
Re: I need some clarification please.... (FlyingTomato)

I understand, what you are saying, just to be safe , I get that, but MY POINT IS there is a yes or no answer to this question, there has to be because H&R race lower the same for every 2002 1.8T, it does not vary from car to car UNLESS you have different wheels. I have the factory 15" avus and there is either the answer YES it hits the swaybar/axle or NO it does not. So that is all I am trying to get out of all of you guys.

I put NS Race on a Golf and it did not rub, I put NS Race on a GTi and it did. Hit and miss but you can just use longer swaybar links with regular springs. Much cheaper and easier to install.
BTW the OEM links changed about mid 2001, mine are welded metal (no rubbing) and the ones on the Golf were cast one piece (rubbing).

Thanks, you mean in 2001 the did rub and in 2002 the dont, or vise versa.
