In the next few weeks I am about to get some Fk coilovers(height adj only) and I am planning on installing them in my garage. I have a few questions:
1. Does the top front strut nut require a VW special tool? or can I use an socket?
2. I know Fks come already assembled but do i need to take them apart to install the strut bearings?
3. For the front all I need to replace is the strut bearing. What do I need to replace on the rears? I noticed they have supports, strut bearings, mounting ring(rubber that seems to mate the bearing).
4. Do I need to disassemble the old struts to use anything on them?
5. On a hammer rating how hard will it be (10 being headgasket and 1 being oil change)?
Any pictures will help greatly!!
Thanks in Advance.

Re: I need some help installing coilovers!! (VRSIX POWER)

They should have everything you need. Im sure youll have to transfer a part of 2 but they come with everything you need.
No you dont need a "special tool'! Its called an allen head
..
You rating chart is kinda cofusing, an oil change is easy but then so is a head gasket, it just takes more time!
Its all common sense, once you get down their and take a look around, it goes quick. It should only take about 2 hours, if that!
There are 3 bolts on each of the struts and 2 on the shocks!

1. no the VR6 just had a nut where the G60 you need the tool
2. yes you have to take the front apart (just the nut) to bolt the bearing in place
3. You can replace the rear bushings if needed (2 pieces, top and bottom)
4. You shouldn't need anything from the old struts other then the front bearings and the rear bushings (if you dont' buy new ones)
5. if you never have done supension before.. i'd say 6.5 hammers.. after that it's down towards 3-4 hammers

Don't have many pics but this will give you and idea of the stock/coilovers side by side:

if you have access to an air gun, you dont need that "special tool" to get it off..... The speed of the airwrench will get it off with no problem. Just replaced my struts last year and found this out. Doing it by hand, the strut will just turn which wont allow he nut to come undone.

G60 Dude- You can get the strut hat nut off with an impact gun but I was refering to the nut that holds the assembly together. The VR6 has a normal nut that a socket will get off but the G60 has that special 2 slot nut that you need a tool for or you can use a hammer and flat head screwdriver to pound it off (usually will work

Wow, 2 hours! I wish mine would have taken 2 hours. He's right though. It's not complicated. The only hard part was getting the bolts off the rear shocks. Their in a tight location(especially the one on the gas tank side
) After a little WD-40, a 1ft. pipe, and a few curse words, voilla! I broke a few 1/4" drive sockets and a wratchet, but a certain tool manufactuer that has stores in most shopping malls was kind enough to replace them for free.
Good Luck.

To make it easier you can remove the top rear shock bolts first and lower the whole suspension (actually it rotates but..) then you can easily get to the lower shock bolts http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

sorry....... misinterpreted....
its been over a year......im trying to recall what you are talking about....not questioning you...... just don't remember using a hammer to pound something off
well.....good luck anyways.........so ive been reading that with coilovers, alot of times you will need spacers, especially in the rear....you find this true?

Re: I need some help installing coilovers!! (G60 dude)

Once you remove the top nut and upper "hat" (and the 2 bottom bolts on the hub assembly) the strut assembly is removed. The nut i'm talking about it the one that hold the G60 strut bearing to on the shock shaft and compresses the spring too. You need a special 2 prong tool for that nut (or the other way i stated above)
With stock wheels I didn't use spacers on my Jetta, the Corrado has never had a stock wheel/coilover combo and I did need spacers. It's really dependent on what width rim and offset you are running (I have a 17x7.5 35mm offset with a 8mm spacer correcting it to 27mm..)

Thanks alot cramer. That helps alot!! I just have one more question. Are the coilovers compressed? So when I install the bearings do I need to use that machine?
Thanks

They should be compressed but the nice thing about coilovers is you can just adjust them all the way down to take the pressure off the spring hat and you can remove it and the nut without the need for spring compressors
