OK I am going to change my trans on my 97 golf. Reverse is blow. I need to know what kind of oil is best for these trans, and about how much? I know you fill it up to the fill whole, but anyone know about how much that is? Also any suggestions on a good aftermarket clutch? I heard a sachs is a good one with a little more clamping force than stock. Is this true? What exactly is the clutch name I thought I hear a while back with just a regular sach and sports etc. Any help or advice will be great. Thanks.

Re: I need to know what oil for manual trans (1997 Golf GL)

Get a Bentley and make sure you do it right. I can't help you because I have an AEG engine.
What does the owners manual say for weight. I know VW uses a synthetic gear lube. I believe it will be GL4 for your car. DO NOT USE GL5, SUCH AS MOBIL 1.
Valvoline SynPower gear lube, Red Line MT-90, and AmsOil are all good lubes.

Re: I need to know what oil for manual trans (JettaRed)

A lot of people use MT-90 from a variety of companies. I've heard of people using Redline, Castrol GTX and OE VW with no problems. I haven't heard anything either way about Mobil1. JettaRed, what have you heard?

Re: I need to know what oil for manual trans (1997 Golf GL)

I used mobil 1 synthetic in my tranny. It helped smooth the shifts and stoped the grind going into second. I also blew reverse I replaced it with a 9A tranny from a 86 GTI. I went with a 8v sachs cluch disk witha 2l 16V pressure plate. It grabs alot harder then the stock set up. My friend has a clutchmaster Stage 3 clutch and he loves it. Pedal feel isn't much different then stock put it grabs 10x better then my setup when you drop it for a burnout.
