My dad takes my car to the dealer because the o2 sensor failed (again). They knew this was recalled (the car is out of warranty) and were going to fix it. They also discovered that the glovebox was half broken and the power mirror know had just broke (thanks to Dad driving it to the dealer
). Anyway so the car was out of warranty so this was going to be a $200 or more repair. Well my dad told me this and I called VWoA and asked nicely if they would cover it. Eventually they agreed; the glovebox, knob, and o2 sensor would all be replaced free of parts & labor.
My mom drives me to the dealer to pick up the car today. We get there and get the bill; all is in place, the three components were replaced. Then there's a charge for $42.48. It says:
"D CUSTOMER STATES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND CAR SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS
36 EMISSIONS
2090 CVW 0.50
SEE LINE C MAY BE CAUSED BY AFTERMARKET RADIO LABOR CHARGE TO REMOVE AFTERMARKET RADIO AND HO OK UP VW UNIT SO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SYSTEM COUL D BE ACCESSED"
Line C says:
"C PERFORM WA RECALL
CAUSE: PERFORM WA RECALL
WA13 PERFORM WA RECALL, REPLACE O2 SENSOR AND
FLASH ECM
2090 WVW 1.20"
Naturally I asked to speak with the service manager. He says the check engine light system could not be accessed with the aftermarket radio in place. He says the aftermarket radio (a Blaupunkt Casablanca, which uses the same hook ups as the stock radio) was not allowing the CE light to be reset. I've heard stuff about the "k wire," is that what he's talking about? I personally have caught this dealer trying to screw me before and beleieve thats what they're doing again. He says he removed my aftermarket radio and had to put in a stock radio one. I think they were upset about my out of warranty car getting hundreds of dollars in repairs done for nothing. Does anyone know if it's BS? And if it is or isn't, can someone explain it to me in technical language?

yes, it's the k-wire. Yes, the radio is a part of the car's electrical system. No, he probably wasn't BS-ing you.

I still would like a little more info (if anybody knows
) but I beleieve a respctable dealer would call and ask before doing this. They would say "Your aftermarket stereo is causing us to not be able to access the ECM. Can we remove it?" But no, these guys don't care about customers.

Edit:
My ignorant father probably signed their paper from hell that says "we can do whatever repairs we want without asking you." Damn.

Yep...what they said. It's completely true, I've already burnt out a fuse on my VAG from a friend's aftermarket stereo...

You didn't get screwed, just remove the radio and you should be fine. I had to remove mine everytime I had a problem such as yours.

basically if you have ANYTHING attached to the kwire besides the stock radio you will blow your dealers diagnostic equipement and they'll have a 5kUSD bill for a new diagnostic unit!!
That's the reason, do I agree with the charge no!

OK, here's what I was told at my dealership. They will take a car with an aftermarket radio if they can verify that the K-wire has been disconnected. That way their dianostic equipment won't get fried.
What I don't agree with is how the service guy said they had to install an OEM radio to diagnose your car. The radio is not an integral part of your car's computer even though you can test the OEM radio through the OBD. As long as you have the K-wire disconnected, they should be able to hook up to the OBD without any problems.
So.......I think they screwed you on the charge. I don't know what to do since you already paid but I would take it up with VW of America and see what they will do for you. But, since there is no way to prove the K-wire was disconnected BEFORE they did the swap back to OEM and diagnosed your car, you are probably out of luck this time.

It's a diagnostic wire that is hooked up to your stock OEM headunit. It MUST be removed when installing a new headunit or the dealer will deny servicing you. I believe it is blue on the big connector...
Just cut and tape.

I think they should've called you first, about the charge. It would've given you time for you, yourself to put back to OEM radio. I say fight it, you never said okay.

Sounds like the techs had some vauge idea that yes, aftermarket stereos can fry VAG tools, but they didn't need to actually replace it with a stock one. Truthfully, your k-wire probably isn't hooked up to anything (unless you wired your stereo wrong), but check that TSB that the guy above posted to see what we're talking about.

That's wild! I didn't realize you could append attachments with this software, though I'm sure its only an Admin right.

Dude, they covered over $200 in repairs that they had no obligation to cover and you're bitching about $40? The dealer was correct in pulling the HU. The only questionable gripe you have is that they should have called you before pulling the HU. You would have to agree to this charge in any case so they could use their VAG to reset the CE so the outcome is the same. What you can do is to fork over the $40 that you owe mom.

Blaupunkt have the same harnesses as the stock headunits. did you just plug the stock harness into the headunit? even thought it seems a little backasswards.. .get the harness adapter and cut the 2 extra wires off (k-wire.. and another one)
