My friend got a $380 ticket the other day because he had a K&N cone filter (FIPK kit). I thought that only 241 stated we weren't allowed to modify our vehicles. Since it didn't pass, intakes should be legal, right? He's obviously going to court to fight it, and I bet the cop won't show.
Is a K&N cone filter illegal?

I just talked to a friend on mine from Mississauga, he's a cop. He said that some cops will give you a ticket if they see an air filter or anything that it's obvious when you open the hood. He said that they're attitude is: "I don't care, take it to court". However, they only stop you to look under the hood if you do something stupid or you have a tricked out car. He said that they're doing this because the number of racing incidents and other stupid things like that has grown too much recently.

"I don't care, take it to court"??
What an intelligent attitude

I know PACER is about educating the public - but I think we need to educate some cops. Air Filters = racing? So I guess that filter makes you as fast a stock vette now?

Uh oh - rims and tint.. this guy is fast and furious.. we better ticket him before he hurts someone.
No wonder the traffic courts are all tied up with crap. What a waste of people's time and taxpayer's money.

Re: I thought bill 241 didn't pass! (IndigoBlue1.8t)

I was thinking about this the other day:
Modifying cars is something that has been done since day 1 - it's nothing new.
Modifying sport compact cars was pretty rare 10 - 15 years ago. There were a few of them out there, but no where near the number there are today. The popularity of modifying sport compacts has grown exponentially over the last decade.
10 years ago, the cops rarely pulled you over for having a modified car. In fact, it's only be recently that they have been pulling over and ticketing modified cars. If these things are illegal, why didn't the cops give out tickets years ago? They wait until the the modified trend has reached an epidemic proportion and then try to stop it by ticketing cars? If the Police had been on the ball 10 years ago and tried this tactic before the trend became so popular, they might have had a chance at controlling it.

Normally, if you have an open element air cleaner, your crank case is then vented into the atmosphere (that little cone filter that comes with the kit) so now the problem is a emissions issue, as you have bypassed emissions equipment so yes it is illegal
. Crank case emissions on a stock intake system get fed back into the intake and burned off in the cylinders.

go do an emissions test
and take it to court
say that the modifications on your car meet all of the legal requirements, and that the car has PASSED emissions test,
therefore what would be the reason for issuing the ticket?

But still.. all that hassle for an intake? Makes you think twice before getting a CAI...
Is there any simple way to check if a mod is legal? It seems like everthing is up to the discretion of the cop.

why did your friend open his hood? I think they have to have reasonable cause to search your car and that's for criminal stuff..not stupid car ****...and if they wanted to search your car for car **** they need an MTO guy not just a normal cop. If a normal cop asked me to open my hood..and I'd tell him to call MTO and get somebody down here than I'll do it..and if I'm not getting a ticket for anything you can see..which I can't..fuk you I'm out of here

If a cop asks you to open your hood and you don't, you're acting like you have something to hide. Plus, the cop will start with the "you're resisting an officer BS". I can understand why he opened it. He didn't think he had anything to hide.

On some intakes, like the AEM, it gets rerouted back to the intake.
