I want a build thread too...

But I'm not doing any major, major mechanical or body work. Mainly because I want to pay off the car, buy an old VW bus and keep this car as my daily driver. Also because I'm broke. I bought my car in Feb. of this year and I've done very little to it aside from restoring some of the interior to what it should have been when I bought it. I've got my list, but I'd also like some suggestions.
Here's the car when I bought it:

What I've done so far:
Swapped this for the factory wheel without an airbag (I want to swap it again for a leather wheel from a '98 Wolfsburg, but I don't know how the airbag will react to a car without airbag sensors)

Fixed this little issue:

Putting this in tomorrow:

I also installed my head unit and iPod control cable, swapped the empty CL center console for one that actually functions (no cubby, ashtray or cup holder in the stock CL center)
The list:
Tan leather seats (heated?)
LED's throughout the interior (red/white?)
Under dash lighting (I can't stand driving at night and not being able to see my feet)
Take off the hideous wing and shave the back end
Re-tint everything (it looks like it was done by someone with downs)
Replace the stock speakers
Turn the little nook under the e-brake into a proper iPod dock
MK4 shift knob
Strip the interior and sound-proof it so I can't hear every road noise
And the only real body work I want to do is gonna be a tough one, but I've seen it done on a MK3 Jetta, so I know it's do-able:
MK2 4-light grille
The things I want to do but don't 100% know what to do:
Replace the ashtrays with something that I'll use (I don't smoke)
Replace the cigarette lighter with something that I'll use (see above)
Any other suggestions for making this thing so comfortable on a road trip that I won't even want to stop for gas, let me know.

LOL, WUT?!?
Re: I want a build thread too... (Hollagraphik)

I don't know what it is. I can't have a completely dark car at night. It drives me nuts. I also need to be able to see the cupholders. Which at the moment, I can't.
Re: I want a build thread too... (tylergreenwood)

new list:
1. wash it
2. buy some nice coilovers
3. get some new wheels
4. get rid of the wing
5. get the tint off the windows, and leave off
6. black leather seats ftw
7. no underdash lights for your feet (theyre not going to go anywhere)
8. l.e.d's are gay. esp red/white combo? your car is blue.
this is just what i would do tho. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Pics are from Feb. It's been washed since. Coilovers will be the last step. Wheels are expensive, but may get replaced. Wing's going (it's on the list). No love for the tinting?
It's actually a black car, they're ****ty cell phone pics.
Re: I want a build thread too... (tylergreenwood)

tint is ok. but keep your car clean on the inside and you wont need to hide anything. and if its black the eah black leather. unless you redo the dash to match the tan. coilover will make the car look 100x better
Re: I want a build thread too... (johnbeck4)

This is exactly the colour set I want to go with for the interior:

As for the tint, it's coming off for sure, I'll see if I like it without before deciding to get it redone or not. How easy is it to peel that **** off your windows? Am I going to need to scrub for days to get rid of residue?

How easy is it to remove? What's the best thing to temporarily fill the holes with? There's some rust and dents and whatnot all over the car, so it'll be getting a paint job, but not quite yet and I want that wing gone. Eight months with it has been too long.

Re: (tylergreenwood)

tint just spray ammonia on it and then use a blade to start peeling from the top and once you have a good amount to grab just pull it all out slowly and then throw amonia again and scrape to clean the glue and then throw some windex and clean it. pretty easy.
and the wing i didnt plug mine.I took it out as soon as i bought the car.

Thanks for the tips with the tint. Hopefully I can get it off without too many issues.

After:

I took out the green filters too, so a night pic is in order.

Night time:

Really makes me wonder why they decided on green filters for the instrument panel. I also really love being able to change the colour on my HU to make it match.

if you think about it though, people will want to change anything from stock no matter what it is really. if the stock color was red or blue im sure there'd be people that would want to do green or orange instead. anyways...i'm really liking what you've done with the interior lighting http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
