I want to remove my back windows.......

Yes I am thinking of taking out the glass in the two back windows....
how hard is that? I know removing the windshield is easy....just cut the foam rubber.
I am thinking about replacing the glass with sheet metal. As long as it is swappable like the windshield is....
how much weight would I shave by doing this?
My goal is to basically make the back windows look like body colored metal ...I am not trying to modify the car and smooth it into the body.....just replace the glass with metal.
CAn it be done and is it worth it?

probably expensive.... i'd think in the 1,200 - 2000 range by the time you got the metal fabbed, and painted (and then what to do on the interior of the metal?
you'd save some weight.... 50lbs? just a guess. i can think of easier ways to shed weight, but it'd certainly be unique.

well I have been noticing that I don't use those windows ever and I plan to remove teh back seats in my new car and get racing seats that don't pivot forward...so why have extra glass right? Anyway when I do get the new car I will not buy the sunroof so I will be saving massive weight overall.....
I can fab the sheet metal myself....as for painting that is not a problem either.
My real question is how easy is it to remove the glass and can I put the metal in as though it were glass with the same kind of seal so it is reversable.....
As for the interior I ped on that one....I don't know yet.

pvw (i think) had a silver mkIII (mkIV front end) that had the rear side windows filled in. (kinda looked like a little van)
if you want to save weight.. would lexan be lighter than sheet metal?
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (flipp)

I don't know...but would it be more expensive? can I tint lexan?
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (flipp)

use plexiglass. it would probably be lighter..
are you going to put some graphic over it.. i think it would look funny

It's not going to look like a landrover......
anyway to match the styling of the window lines I could just go with tinted plexiglass.....
metal is pretty light though...they use thing ga sheet metal and then bend it a bunch of times for strength. Of course that is more work....
I bet I could pop out the window...take it to a shop that cuts plexiglass and get a new one made...
although is the glass curved at all because that may be a difficult task to copy.
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (QuickStick)

plastic is the way to go on a racecar i think. if i were running 'prepared' in my mk1 next year instead of street prepared, i'd be losing glass left and right.
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (John A)

I am curious...I haven't read all the rules for SCCA classification...but what kind of weight reduction puts you up into prepared?
I don't really care that much because honestly my car will never be in a class where it dominates because first off it is not the best AutoXer stock so I want to mod it and by the time I do the mods that make me happy to drive it I am already in a class I can't honestly compete in....
I think I am going to have to just mod my car the way I want and race in whatever class that puts me in and just worry about improving my time and not worry about competing so much.....money definitely rules the game in SCCA when you are in prepared...if you are stock then we all know the 2-3 cars that clean up there and none of them are VWs so oohwell.....
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (John A)

P.S. Is it illegal or a ticketable offense to replace your windows with plexiglass or steel? I know vans do this but I don't want to stop my car from being street legal.
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (QuickStick)

i thought about popping out the back windows.. and trying to make them pop out.. Like how they do on the older VW's and the new 330CI's... the only things is where to mount the bracket and how to make it seal
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (DuckyGTI)

I agree, having the back windows pop out would be so sweeeeet. reminds me of my fathers Vega in the early 70's.
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (QuickStick)

I can give you my window regulators... those will make the windows disappear completely!!!
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (QuickStick)

some of the scca rules are here:

basically, i think by removing windows you'd end up in D prepared, but don't quote me on it. straight up 'prepared' is wacky, hard stuff. people with lexan windows, and no interior, and no headlights, and huge front air dams and all kinds of other stuff.
i'm shooting for street prepared since it's basically 'any wheels / tires, any suspension, any intake and exhaust' and that's about it.
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (John A)

what about STS? I was thinking of going for this category it seems to be very similar to street prepared....
last AutoX everyone with basic modified cars was in this class....type Rs old M3s miatas...that sort of thing...
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (John A)

you can buy tinted plexiglass @ lowes, or home depot, not too expensive
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... ([email protected]_VVuLFzBoRg)

that's great so my question is still: how do the windows come out? Is it similar to the windshield where there is a layer of rubber glue that hold it on? This style would make swapping very easy with the correct tools.....
Re: I want to remove my back windows....... (QuickStick)

plexi windows wouldn't fly in STS. it's a pure 'prepared' mod. sts is a fun class, that's what myself and rich (beetle and gti 1.8t guy) ran all summer in englishtown.
for $400 i bought a mk1 GTI 8v, which is pretty much the single best car for FSP (like how the integras kill G stock)

http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif for originality....I'd love to see how that would turn out. Better get some split-zone mirrors though- you're gonna create a huge blind spot
Good luck with it.
