I was at the Chicago Auto show today, and I got a chance to sit in it and shift around. My verdict? Utter and complete dissapointment. The shifting not only still feels rubbery, the floor model already has the 2nd gear grind, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to find gears. The throws felt longer than my 5-speed. The interior is as bland as could possibly be. They got rid of the faux-wood dash kit(thankfully) but now they have nothing but rubbery looking plastic peices in its place. The seats are the same unsuportive crap as well. I also sat in the Jetta GLI, and all that was stated above was also true for this vehicle. The VW booth was also a huge let-down --- no Phaeton, no concept cars. The only really cool thing was the W8 Passat. They did have a cool machine that blow-molded little plastic newbeetles.
I took over 300 pictures and am currently working on a web site that should be accessible in the coming days.
P.S. Mini's are about 25x cooler in person. I WANT ONE. The Mini booth was swarming like a bee hive -- this car will be a HUGE HIT in the US!

i agree with the above statement.
sitting in and driving are 2 completely different things. my throws seem like crap when i'm sitting in my car, but driving doesn't feel half as bad.

Yeah, I agree. You have to really drive it to get the true feel. I'm sure that 5 year olds were yanking the stick back and forth all day (without the clutch) as well as other people. So I'm sure it's not gonna feel perfect. The synchos are probably a little off.

That's not the case guys. With the clutch pushed down, regardless of whether or not hte engine is on, one can get the feel of a shifter. The same way that when you shift a BMW with the engine off you go "ohhhhhhhhhhhhh my" is the same way you can feel crappy shift linkage. I got there at opening time this morning, so the odds that both teh GLI and the 24v GTI had been screwed up during the first morning of the show in the 5 minutes before I got there are slim. The throws were too long also. IN addition, I could feel the shifter almost catch right before shifting into 2nd. Trust me, you'll feel it and know what I mean. THe magellan was not there as of this morning, but companies have been known to add various cars throughout the week whent they get back from more important car shows. No 25th Aniversary GTI. No Phaeton. Very dissapointing. Don't worry, you'll end up going across the path the Mini booth, drool, have an aesthetic orgasm, and then decide what your next car will be

Please buy your Mini. Let us know how you like dealing with the BMW when you blow up your Mini engine like you blew up your GTI. Also, let us know, in general, how you like paying BMW prices for parts and accessories.
FWIW, vehicle dynamics play a role in transmission shifting. No European has ever complained of the 6 speed Golf shifting. Audi TT owners don't complain about the 6 speed (this is the same tranny as the TT 6 speed). But, you sit in one at an auto show (by the way was this the same silver car that was in LA?), and you're ready to dis the tranny. As a show car, it might not be assembled to the same level as a production road car. No one knows exactly what this car will be like until they start arriving. But, most of us know it will be a better performing car than the 12V-5 speed.
VW has got to do something about shift feel. It really is the one problem that can't be worked around through aftermarket stuff, and a place where Honda and BMW products are noticeably better. A short shifter helps, but doesn't change the feel.
Acura just came out with a manual version of the CL Type S, and even though it's a cable shifter, it still feels solid and direct compared to the VW. A Rabbit GTI still feels better, for that matter. Maybe I need one of those A1 trannies in my car...

Re: I was in a 6 speed 24v GTI VR6 today... (VarLordahl)
I sat in this this vehicle at the LA Autoshow and I am afraid I have to respectfully disagree with you. First off, the shifter felt much smoother than my current Jetta. Second, the wood trim was 100% real and I will miss it. I feel it adds a touch of luxury to the car. Finally, I have never experienced the second-gear grind, but I don't how you can possibly detect it on a car that is sitting still and does not require the clutch to change gears.
In any event, you should not expect a huge amount of money to be spent on this vehicle. The 24V VR6/6-speed drive train is replacing the 12V/5-speed combo not so much as to enhance the car as much as to replace a discontinued drive train.
I welcome this addition and lament the loss of the wood trim.
Re: I was in a 6 speed 24v GTI VR6 today... (VeeDubDriver)
I'm going to wait to actually drive one, before I jump to any conclusions about the shifter. Vehicles act different when they are running and driving, than when parked.
Re: I was in a 6 speed 24v GTI VR6 today... (VeeDubDriver)
the only big problem i have is that in canada they are charging an additonal 3000 dollars for this engine above the price of the 12valve vr6. what i dont like is that they are really modernizing the vr6, its something they need to do to be competitive yet they raise the price so much. the 1.8T will be about 4500 less in canada and will have better fuel economy and perform nearly as well stock and with a 500 dollar chip , you know the debate
