Re: ian got a ? for you. (#466gti)

There were some post regarding this issue some time ago.
Mine has it too. I've painted it in black.

It's much better now.

Here's another solution.

In that second pic, is it bent up a bit? Looks different than the first. Not sure if it is just the lighting. Well i dont know what it is, but cutting it off sounds like fun. Weight reduction.

I too was wondering about this hideous piece behind the bumper. It looks like it was cut with a dull pair of tin snips.

It would be great if there was a black mesh kit to put in the openings that would help camouflage the sheetmetal and match the front bumper mesh.

yeah thats the solution i was looking for, a plastic mesh to match the front, but i havnt been able to find anything, short of buying the front mesh, and then cutting it to fit.
the peice is so ugly it looks like vw let a class of special ed students go crazy with a plasma cutter.

WTF???
Is that a Euro Rear Bumper or an aftermarket one??

The license plate should not be hanging below the cutout...

I don't think its metal. I was poking at it yesterday and have decided to cut it off via the Dremel. I'm basically going to make it straight across. Though it'll have to wait since I leave for the drive to the ND show in 6 hours.

ian? bueller? bueller?

I don't see what I can contribute to this thread.
It's not part of the heat shield. It's part of the body, and appears
to be extraneous. For whatever reason it's cut weirdly there.
I don't ever look at the back of my car from that angle
so I don't really care what it looks like. If I cared, I'd
probably paint it black.

I have the same piece of metal back there, but it appears to be cut "properly." Sort of like this:
\________
And, it's painted blue. There are no rough edges, so I'll just ignore it. I never noticed that vestige until someone here mentioned it.

An easy black mesh solution for narrow openings is the fine black plastic mesh that is sold at Home Depot for gutter covering. It comes in a roll and can be cut to fit as required. Since the rear slot opening is narrow, this solution should work perfectly.
Make note to self: Stop by Home Depot tonight.

Or you can buy a center lower R32 grill and use that. It provides just enough material and then matches the front. I did that and it looks really good ($18 for the grill, $5 for some epoxy) and only takes an hour or so.
