No. You can do the service or have it done somewhere else (besides dealership). Just be sure to keep your paperwork should it ever come into question

I was once told that the oil change must be done by a "certified" mechanic,
but who knows?

Jebus?

Then the dealer is voiding our warranty by having the "trainee" do these jobs.

The only thing you gain by having the work done by someone else, is a piece of paper that makes it more difficult for the dealer to say the work was never done.

No, but remember that the 10000 mile service is more than an oil change, and it should be free at the dealer for 2001 models in the United States.
If you do maintenance work yourself, be sure to keep receipts for oil, parts, etc. to show evidence that you actually did the maintenance.

I wonder too that if you don't get the dealer to do the work, will VW try to weasel out of the 100K powertrain?

I'm curious about this too. I have changed the oil in our cars for the last 5 years or so and don't want to have to make an appointment for a simple oil change.
Any one have experience with the powertrain warranty and changing your own oil?

you can't do it your self (well you can but if anything goes wrong with your engine then the dealer might refuse to fix your engine under warranty)
however if you do it @ no vw dealer service it should be fine as long as you keep the receipt.
I spoke with VW consumer service (1 800-......) and that what see said!

I got my 10K done a few weeks ago. They only charged me, like, $127 for the service including the oil change.
I thought that was a fair price for keeping the car, the dealer and VW all happy at the same time. Go for the dealer service - the little stamp in your book will look nice if anything should happen later.
