Re: i'm curious...how does a bodyshop "chop" a car? (wnut)

talk to hot rodders.... most vdubbers dont have the time/$$ to do that. I know its ALOT of hard work and very $$$$ especially when it has to do with glass.
Its cool though, that golf looks like a scirrocco

There's an feature article in an old The Golf mag about one of those, they need to cut the roof into sections and wled it back together after trimming it down so it would fit correctly on the A, B, C pillars, lotta time=lotta money.

Pardon the relative ghettoness of my 5-second Photoshop work...but this should give you a rough visual idea of how it's done:

1.) The roof is cut across the car where the yellow marks are; sections of the a/b/c pillars are removed (green marks on picture), the larger the section the lower the top will be. The top will also usually have to be cut down the middle (from front to back) to account for the tapering of the side profile of the car.
2.) The frontmost cut section is moved forward and down, the middle section is moved down, and the rearmost cut section is moved back and down. Blue areas are openings left over. Doing this will prevent from having to redo all of the pillar profiles.
3.) Filler pieces are formed and welded in; same with the middle after it has been split. Result: chopped roof.

Generally you have to have all-new glass custom made for the whole car, and all the rubber window gaskets/moldings, plus you'll have to mess with the interior trim around the roof and pillars and make that fit right as well.

With most Streetrods the standard is a three inch chop. The most impressive thing on the green golf is the correct taper on the doors at the B pillar. Nice chop! The hatch may have been pretty difficult also. Is the door mis-aligned? Looks like its slighty sagging. The more I look at that car the more I like it.
