Yeah no clear. I did mine at a body shop and they use a special dupont matte black paint with UV Coating already in the paint.

Re: Im feeling flat......black (blackoutjetta)

Alot of mis information in this thread !!
There are 2 ways for this and most (all) will not be done at the Home Depot. Skip the local hardware store and please go to a reputable auto paint supplier in your area. We are working on cars here guys....not kitchen cabinets.

You can use a standard base coat black. There isnt anything special here just base coat black
PPG DCU Deltron 2000
http://www.ppg.com/refinishftpsite/docs/p-175.pdf
Lay the base coat and then now you have to decide how flat you want it. PPG makes a product called FIXED AND FLAT
PPG DBC 2060
http://www.ppg.com/refinishftpsite/docs/p-217.pdf
The Fixed and Flat product can be mixed by itself for a 100% FLAT finish mixed 6:1:1 hardener and reducer. Other PPG clears can be added in different ratios to bring the finish up to Eggshell / satin / semi gloss etc.
A flat clear CANNOT BE WETSANDED !! Be sure you have a very clean painting environment because dust, dirt, bugs whatever....cant be removed. If you need to wetsand out imperfections the clear will have to be reshot.
There are some HOT ROD finishes on the market that are a single stage flat base coat. Many are very hard to lay with out becoming blotchy.
From an experienced painter....I suggest spending the $$ and taking it to your local shop. The cost may be less than you expect. Shop around and find an "enthusiast friendly" paint shop.
PM me for any questions.

Re: Im feeling flat......black ([email protected])

thanks a lot Russ. *chanting* RUSS RUSS RUSS. thanks a lot for all this info but...
this grill has just been laying around so i decided to do something. when i get the money i will get a GT front and i will get it done in flat black (or what ever color) professionally. Also it had the dealer plate holes in it so theres another reason in to not spend a lot of money into it. Again thanks and i still want those black wheels with red lip.. but not to get off topic... when i get the GT front i will def. take it to a real shop. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

i had a low gloss painted onto my grill and the lower area of my oettinger rear bumper in march... it had enough gloss to protect, but unfortunately you can't clear over flat. it has held up great with a few small rock chips, but thats to be expected.
i did paint a set of teardrops a few years ago, but used a thick coat of high gloss in between coats of flat black and finished it off with a thick coat of flat black. it still had a flat finish but had the protection of 4 layers of the gloss. something to think about.
