ok so this is the story. Last night me and a couple buddies went out for a cruise, i had just changed my oil that day and put in 5-30 in, and i was driving the car kinda hard but not THAT hard, anyways, when my revs would drop to about 2G's when we were at moderate speeds mu oil light would come on for about 1 or 2 seconds. Some one tell me why this happend?????

Re: I'm having prob with synthetic oil (91Golf)

probably pressure drop. Your oil pump may be on the way out, and the thinner synthetic is making it more obvious. You can try thickening it a little, but the problem is probably the older pump. This all assuming the level is fine, of course.

to thin oil
i always used castrol 20w50 ALWAYS year round
well one time i got like some way thinner i think it was 10w30 er something
ran fine
but on sharp turns the oil buzzer went off and light.. =o!
i switched back to 20w50 and never had a problem.
i think ur oil is to thin....

quote:

Yeah, so try switching to a 5W-40, or even 15w-50 and see if it doesn't happen. If thicker oil keeps the light away you're probably near the end of your oil pump.

So Tbird's had you? wow.

Alright, it's not like thick oil automatically means the pump is gonna die or anything, but the cars shouldn't require it to run right. The manuals list the same oil ranges as most cars.
That said, I've been running Valvoline 20W-50 in all my cars.
I'm waiting for M1 15W-50 fully synthetic to go on sale. Really, you want to run the thinnest oil your car seems to run good with, in general. Thicker oils just make the pump work harder.

this is a common mistake people make, synth oil and reg oil of the same weights are the same "thickness".
your problem is, like most others have said, your oil is too thin, nothing to do with synth oil. when i had an 84gti (rip) i ran mobil 1 10w40, and ive had friends run 20w50 in a2 8v's. i now drive a 91 gli and run mobil1 15-w50.
you may also want to look into the vw motorsports windage tray, they can b had for aound 30 bux and one place to buy them is at velocity (www.velocitysport.com)

Re: I'm having prob with synthetic oil (panic)

Oh, guess I did make it sound like that, sorry. Correct, it's the actual viscosity, not the fact that it's synthetic. That you will almost never see anything but synthetic that thin doesn't mean thin organic wouldn't have the same problem.
