So I bought a new tank from discount gas tanks. It doesn't have the plastic assembly for the in tank filter to mount in. What should I do??

I used a new Discount gas tank in a 1979 Rabbit project. My gas tank did not have any provision for the insertion of the in-tank plastic filter.
The only option is to not use the in-tank filter since the Discount gas tank does not accomodate it.

is this a good idea? I wouldn't want to ruin my accumulator or pump

You can install an external small canister type gas filter. I believe a Vangon used an external filter that fits the inside diameter of the rubber gas hose from the gas tank to the inlet of the fuel pump.
Some fabrication may be required to install an external filter.
