Infotainment Software Update Guide

Hi,

I created a guide on how to update the infotainment software. I went from version 1880 to the latest version, 1941. I did this because of Android Auto issues which weren't fixed. However it's slightly faster and who knows what further updates will come along. The guide works for whatever comes out on the software site that's linked to in the guide.

Just a couple of notes - Only the 10.5" infotainment system has the 1941 update. The 8.25" system doesn't use the same update package version and there's nothing available for it.

Please let me know if there's any errors or anything confusing, I'll gladly update it.

Excellent write up. I followed a similar set of instructions a couple months ago. Went from 1896 to 1941. Your documentation is great.

Nice writeup as always!...I am in the US, have a 2022 GTI S, my current version reads -
MEN3_EU_VW38X_P1265L
ver.1766

I went into the MEN3 folder, and the only thing in there is
MEN3_EU_SK370_P2345L.7z
Type Compressed Archive

302MB, that doesn't look like the right size for an update, and the files are dated from back in September 2022.

After doing the research I found a thread for people having Android problems, turns out the SK version appears to be for Czech automaker Skoda Auto (Skoda Scala). Guess maybe there is no update available for mine at this time.

So every software update that gets done through VW needs to be documented through ODIS/DISS. So that means they will know what version you should have in the infotainment. Same thing with OTA here in Europe. They will know if your infotainment was updated OTA and what version it should be. It all comes down to what the technician decides to do with that information. He could decide to downgrade the software to the last known version installed, decide to exclude the warranty for the infotainment if it has problems, etc...

With the new 1941 software update based on the TPI there is a 2 part operation:
1. Software update of radio-navigation system (diagnosis address 005F)
and
2. Software configuration of radio-navigation system (diagnosis address 005F)

The first part is the software update of the infotainment control unit (5F) from software 18xx to 1941.
The second part is the software configuration of the infotainment control unit (5F) using the test plan/software configuation in ODIS. Here the infotainment coding/adaptations get rewritten so that means there could be changes in the coding.
Here is also a notice from the same 1941 TPI:
  • Please inform the customer that a software update will be carried out on the infotainment control unit. Explain to the customer that after the update various control units will be configured to ensure they work in conjunction with other control units in the vehicle.
  • – Service installations in the vehicle not included in the vehicle equipment list through feedback to the SVM may not work after the configuration. Ask the customer whether he is aware of non-genuine service installations or changes.

I would be careful to install this software yourself especially if you are in warranty , that's my 2 cents.

I didn't notice any adaptations that changed after my update but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen and I'll verify. All my existing settings remained the same as well, like the equalizer, and my phone.

Let me expand my thoughts on the warranty.

Imagine you go for service and have installed your own software version:

1. You go in for a problem unrelated to the infotainment - They won't check it or the software version

2. You go in because the infotainment has a hardware issue where it doesn't turn on - Since there's no way of fixing the individual component they'll replace it (assuming it's not something stupid like wiring). They'll never know what version you had because that hardware is trashed

3. You go in because the infotainment screen has a problem or something where they can access it but it's slightly damaged. - Then they'll replace it, why would they check to see if your software version matches what their database systems

4. You have a software issue - If you have the latest update yourself then they can't help you, if they have a newer update then won't they just install over it? If they refuse then you'll eventually get the latest update probably?

Note here that VW doesn't seem to interested in installing updates, I've asked two dealers if I could even pay them for new versions and they refused. I don't think this would be a common event.

This is boiler plate for any procedure like this.

I wish the automotive industry would learn that they need to do a much better job of informing their customers when software updates are available and what fixes and/or enhancements are being addressed with the software update. I just spent an hour with a VW Customer Service representative and I still was unable to get them to state what software release is the current release for my 2023 VW GTI SE e/w the Harmon Kardon system.

MY 2024 GTI purchased Jan 2nd this year and has 1776.
I have been to 2 dealers to try and resolve the issue. The first told me its my phone or cable and said the car was still in transit mode and they switched that off and sent me on my way. They in passing mentioned there should be OTAs for the infotainment.
The 2nd dealer took the time to test it with me and told me that VW hasn't provided any other steps they can follow to resolve the issue. The tech stated that because the car is a 2024 there wasn't much info from VW on how to resolve the issue. Did confirm iOS devices work, just not Android Auto.

Hi @ren_G18t :

When you wrote "Jan 2 this year", did you mean Jan 2 2024 - like, 2 weeks ago? If so, have a look at the compliance sticker on your driver door post and see what month/year your car was built. I bought a 2024 GTI 3 weeks ago, it was built in October 2023 and came with software version 1939, which I believe is the latest one for North America. Version 1940 is factory-installed for European markets, and version 1941 is the same as 1940, the only difference is that the increment in build number means it was a field update, not a factory installation.

Have you registered with CarNet and set up an account with them? I think that is a prerequisite to get over-the-air updates.

Michael

PS: Mine came with an engine cover.

I don't believe so, they are completely different units. The base model is a single unit, screen and computer. The 10.5" is a screen and an even larger unit above the glovebox.

The SE GTI, AB, and Golf R use "MOI3_EU_VW..." but an S user said
" I am in the US, have a 2022 GTI S, my current version reads -MEN3_EU_VW38X_P1265L ver.1766 "

It's unfortunate how slow updates are coming from VW. In 2022 they fired the CEO who was in charge of the software division. It will probably take time until they can get up to speed.
----------
Bloomberg reports that Diess was blamed for the severe software development delays that set back the scheduled launches of key new Porsche (Macan EV), Audi (Project Artemis) and Bentley electric vehicles. That was unacceptable for the company as software problems had also postponed the debut of VW's ID models, and customers are still having to drop off their cars at dealers for updates instead of having them installed over-the-air.

So... I didn't get a definitive answer to this on the Golf VIII R forum. When I unzip the downloaded files directly to my USB-C using 7z I get 62 subfolders in the Data folder. And each of those subfolders contains another subfolder named '21'. Inside each of the '21' folders is another ZIPPED folder.

Do these ZIPPED folders also need to be unzipped, or is the system able to read them?

thanks @Braxton1980 i will check that tomorrow.

but it makes sense your update comes from the R with the fancy headunit :)
GTI SE, and Autobahn also get 10.5.

In China they use a third, different screen that's longer with (what appears to be) a fixed set of digital buttons, as shown in they link

Does anyone know if there’s a chance I might mess up the languages by installing an update? I found an update to the composite two knob media through the link with the thousands of compressed folders a few posts back but the only evidence I see of anyone installing it on a Turkish forum.

I know two people who installed it beside German and English, both Russian.

The module for Turkish speech is included so I assume it's there.

Running 1896. Unable to get the car to begin the update to 1969. First I thought it had to do with formatting or an invisible file but I reformatted and downloaded a second time still nothing. Is this too big a version leap do you think?
