Inner CV Joints? Is there a seal where it meets the tranny?

791 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  negativl
I'm getting tranny fluid coming out by my driver's side inner cv joint. The axle was replaced a couple of months ago by the previous owner. Is there supposed to be a seal where the inner cv joint meets the tranny?

yes, its a black plastic circle that pops into the tranny flange...you may need to replace them if your leaking...its a common problem...I would do both, they are cheap and easy to replace...

what the hell, i posted a min ago, didnt show up. hmmm.. you might also check where the diff outdrives come out of the tranny housing.

Yeap there is a seal there. The seal is called a output flange seal. Common problem as mentioned earlier.

How easy is it to replace? I'm guessing I have to take off the axles and then pop the new seals in? How much do get this done at a shop?
Oh, and is there any other areas where the tranny fluid could leak out onto the ground besides these seals? The only other thing I can think of is a hole in the case.
Another thing, I noticed that the tranny fluid has some metallic sediment in it. The transmission feels great though. No grinding at all and everything is smooth. Is this the self-machining syndrome or are my syncros going bad?
PS. it's a 5 spd manual

sounds like SMS, my 86 GTI had it...what year is your car? When mine went it just spilt all the tranny fluid onto the ground, then drove fine...
...I still had the tranny changed...the one that had the SMS from my GTI is sitting around, I am too lazy to fix it...
Tranny flange seals require seperating the CV from the tranny, and using a screwdriver to tap the old one out, and gently tap the new one in...2-3 hours labor for me...

Color of the metallic sediment? White/gray like the diff parts or yellowish like the syncros? white/gray, probably the beginnings of SMS, don't wait as you're getting ready to loose the cross shaft or something. Lucky you got to see that when you did.

The inner CV boot kits come with a seal, bolts, pin, washer and grease. The seal might be baked onto your CV. Gently peel off as much as you can and then let it sit in gas or Varsol for a few hours. The remainder of the gasket should come right off. Be careful not to get that grease all over your hands. Otherwise they'll stay stained for a few days.

My car is an '89. The color is silverish metallic. So, I'm basically out of luck and need to replace the tranny soon?

If you've got silver metal fragments in your fluid, that's either aluminum or steel. You can save your tranny if you stop using it, since it's still working. It's losing it's fluid. Ideally, they're non-magnetic actually, since that'll just be the housing, not the steel gears. You need to disassemble the tranny anyway, so harder to clean is better than gear damage.
If you search around, I think it was Dieder who posted a link to an article about SMS that mentions Techtonics having a repair process. You can certainly go to other places. Basically, the tranny will need to be pulled apart to decide what needs fixing, but at a minimum:
Patching the housing. It should be a hole between the diff area and the bellhousing, which means the clutch is also ruined, but anyway. You'll want to find a shop that'll TIG weld the housing back up just like TTT talks about doing. My 4K has epoxy, which works, but isn't nearly as good. (PO's fault).
Bolt kit. Fixing the differential. Need to replace the rivets, install circlips, and make sure the cross shaft seats. My 4K was clearly still loose, as there are some spot welds on top of the clips.

Have the pinion shaft gear checked. It's the smaller part of the final drive gear, so it's likely taken the damage there, if any. If teeth are chipped, you're either putting together a not so good tranny, or looking for a new pinion/ring pair.

Yup that was me... heres the link to that thread

Another note... I forgot where I read this, but.... Not all bolt kits are designed the same, the Peloquin and the VW kits have lil retaining clips that go with the bolts, unlike ARP's kit (just bolts). Just something to think about.

Heres an exploded view of your seals, and flanges ect

Peloquin's kit for $80 included the seals, and some shims which increases the stock dif. preload 80%.
hell heres the rest of your tranny...

this "SMS" is interesting. I have never heard of such a thing until today?...

Are you fairly new to A2s? It was one of the first things I heard about when I joined up here. Every month or so someone posts about "I was driving[or riding] with my friend, just cruising on the [freeway, whatever], not racing or anything, when we heard this horrible clattering grinding noise and..." usually followed by some rather ugly pictures of the engine bay where a complete tranny used to be.
