The other day at my local dealership, Paul in the parts department introduced me to the "self dimming mirror." I had heard that the newer models were receiving this option but had not seen one in person.
I picked one up and installed it and man this thing is hot! Not only does it "self dim", but it gives you two map lights on the mirror as opposed to one with their own buttons, but also has two built in LED's that shine a red glow on the dash when you have your lights on!
It's very slick to say the least.
I found a great link over at Newbeetle.org by Bahnburner with some great pics and install instructions.

The link for the install is in Bahnburner's original post complete with pics.
They have more in stock at my local dealership too!! http://www.heritagevw.com
We've all heard horror dealership stories, but they have been great and are very cool to deal with. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Installed the Self dimming rear view mirror w/ red LED's!! (bugley)

Hey guys,
I installed my self-dimming mirror the dayI picked up my Turbo S. I LOVE IT!! No fiddling at night time, the red glow of the LEDs down onto the dash look way cool (especially in the Turbo S), and it is awesome to have seperate map lights. The mirror also hangs a tad lower, which I like.
My only bummer is they only come with blue-lit clock and temp. My Turbo S has white-lit instruments, but the benefits are worth that trade-off, you really don't notice it that much. Talking with bahnburner, it would be too much work to change the illumination from blue to white.
I got my mirror from IMPEX at http://www.vwparts.com for $84.00. I also bought the sunglass holder from them as well, since VW stopped putting them in the newer Beetles. (My 1999 had it)

The other advantage to upgrading to the self dimming mirror is that the algorithm for displaying the snowflake is finally fixed. The older cars like our 2000 had a problem where the snowflake would sometimes get stuck on even if it warmed up to 60F outside and the only way to clear it was to disconnect the battery. Not a problem with the self dimming mirror.
