Installing Floor Mats

465 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  GTIbound
I know this sounds stupid but I bought a set of Black floor mats (the ones with the red JETTA stiching on them) for my black n tan interior Jetta. When I tried to pop them in, however, the stock posts didn't fit too well and you could see the tan post through the floor mat post hole. I then noticed that they sent some black posts that fit the mats perfectly...woo-hoo!!

...and then I tried removing the old, tan posts...

how in the hell do you get these things out? I tried unscrewing them, yanking them (not too hard, I was afraid I'd rip a hole in the carpet) and all sorts of other crap...nothing. Can somebody help me with this crap? It's really annoying. Thanks!!

Re: Installing Floor Mats (GTIbound)

If the carpet lifts when you pull on the post, then the post may be two parts snapped together thru the carpet. If so, go under the carpet from the door sill side and unhook them. If they seem fastened to the chassis of the car, then they must rotate or pull off.
Re: Installing Floor Mats (NC-GTI)

You will need a hammer, safety glasses, helmet, and a crowbar!!

Re: Installing Floor Mats (Blacklightning)

yeah, that and a friggin chainsaw.

I'll try the door sill carpet trick and see if it comes out that way. Thanks!
Has anyone else had trouble with these and what was your solution...besides tearing your car apart bit by bit?

Re: Installing Floor Mats (GTIbound)

What a coincidence....I just did this tonight...but on my 2002 GTI. In the rear seat, the posts simply just unscrew. My floor mats came with 4 new vlack posts for the REAR ONLY!!!
I then went to install the front mats, and noticed that the front posts are fastened a different way. The front ones are fastened to the chassis. This means that I am going to have to paint the front beige posts. Oh well....the beige interior with black mats looks SWEET

Re: Installing Floor Mats (user name unknown)

Wouldn't you be able to unscrew them from the chassis? Man, I thought this crap would be a lot easier - not to mention that directions are NO WHERE to be found. Would it be to damn hard to throw in a set of instructions with whatever part they're sending you? I'm sure most of us can figure stuff out, but damn, it's the small things that end up screwing us up...
