Hey gents. I'm going to admit it right off the bat here -- please don't laugh. I've never removed a wheel from a car. In my 3 years of driving, I've never had a flat. For tire rotations, I make the 10 minute drive to NTB and they do it for free. I've never had to. I am, however, positive that I can do it when I have to. However, I've heard numerous stories about the flimsiness of the VW factory jack. I just ordered the AEM, and I'll be installing it in a couple weeks probably. My problem is that my car is out in the middle of a *giant* parking lot. It's about 1.5 miles from where I live, so I'm going to need to take all the tools necessary for installation there with me--- and going back and forth for addition tools will be a huge PITA. My first question is this:
-What tools are needed(I know generally which ones -- I've installed about 20 intake setups on my and friend's cars-- I'm looking for exact specifics)?
-Also, Is the factory jack good enough just to install the intake? I won't need to risk getting under the car, will I?
If anyone could give me some info it would be greatly appreciated!

come on. lol. I guess you're right. I just know you have to jack up the car and remove the wheel to install the filter on the CAI. I just don't want to go all the way out to the parking lot with my full socket wrench set, full set of screw drivers, pliers, etc... and then find out that for some reason I need a small allen wrench or something to remove a small bolt. This all I'm asking. This, and how reliable is the factory jack?

Hey good luck to you. I'm pretty clueless too, but am gonna take this one on myself also. I have had the intake sitting in a box in my living room for a week now. I'm worried I'll kick off a CEL or something doing it, but you know, I gotta do this....I'll be such a wuss if I don't.
And from what I am hearing, an intake is a total DIY mod.
I've looked over the instructions and have read and re-read every post here on the Vortex about installing it. It looks like an easy job, and you won't need any special tools. Just a few screwdrivers, a couple different sized wrenches (got a ratchet set? even a cheapie ratchet set'll do ya) and maybe a torx wrench (I have a $10. torx knife with like 10 different sized torx keys).
Good luck and let us know how it went. I'm gonna try mine this week if the weather's nice on one of my days off.
[EDIT]O as to jacking up the car, I've heard one guy here say he did it without even taking his wheel off. I think jacking it up and taking the wheel off'll be fine. You're only removing the liner in the wheel well and then putting the filter on the end of the intake. Just be extremely cautious when working in that area. I think 90% of this job can be done before you take the wheel off.[/EDIT]

Just spend $40 and get a small hydraulic floor jack from pep boys. No, not one of those crappy little piston ones, the kind like you see in real mechanic shops. Also get a jack stand if you think that you'll need to get under the car at any point.
Never Ever Ever use a factory jack for doing any kind of car work. It's not worth the risk.

Thanks GreenGTI -- best of luck to you too. I actually do ALOT of work on cars, so I have every conceivable tool either here or at home (my dad rebuilds old Ford Model T's for a hobby, so we literally have an entire room filled with car repair tools). I've just never had any experience with taking rims off. Sounds funny, but it's true. I've installed cams on an Integra Type R, done dozens of intakes, made custom intake setups, done body work, shaved body kits, done electrical and sterio work, but never once removed a wheel

Yet in your infinite knowledge, you still need to ask what tools are involved, and are willing to do work on a car that is propped up with a factory jack?
Right

Please don't use the factory jack for installations. It's meant for emergency use only (i.e., only for changing a tire). You'll be safer buying a 2.5 ton hydraulic jack at Sears.

2 of the best things you can buy (or steal from your roommate) if you're going to work on your car. screw doing any work under a car on a stock jack (even if all you're doing is installing a cai)

Yes, never EVER get under the car with any type of jack. If you are going to be under a car, get some jack stands.... for 60 bucks for a craftsman hydraulic jack and two jack stands, it isn't at all worth getting crushed to death.
You will need a flat head screwdriver, a ratchet set (I think you might only need 10mm) and I'm not quite sure what else. Read over the instructions carefully and refer back to my post about the install, you should be able to do it.
