The MAF's come pre-F'ed up from the factory. They only like to measure very small amounts of slow moving air. Apparently the beancounters at VW won some kind of coin toss against the engineers.
They are kinda like those brita water filters you put on your sink. The more flow it gets the quicker you have to replace it. Mine is two years old now with a AEM intake on it. The engine sound and performance has been greatly enhanced. I am just waiting for the MAF to blow now. Granetelli Motorsports makes some kick butt MAF's for hi-po chevy and ford applications. I wonder if they would make some to replace the POS stock ones.
