Intermitent hard starting problem

448 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ABA Scirocco
Here's what's happening, most of the time my car starts and runs very well, hot or cold but, 6 or 7 times in the last couple weeks I've had trouble starting it will turn over for 10 or 15 seconds before firing up, while cranking it doesn't sound like its going to start then suddenly it fires up, it runs fine afterward. I've been unable to discern a pattern, it's happened cold, it's happened hot. Up to this point I haven't been in a position to test the car when it happens. Anybody got any ideas?

maybe a possible spark problem....maybe, that's a tough one... Could be many things being that it does it hot and cold...
Re: Intermitent hard starting problem (Big CADDY)

New plugs, same thing.

Check fuel pressure bleed down. If the check ball in the pump outlet banjo fitting is leaking, pressure will bleed back into the tank. Takes a long time to start because the pump needs to build up enough pressure to pop open the injector from 0 psi. Check the bently for bleed down specs.

Interesting, I wouldv'e never thought of that. I'll have to wait until it starts doing this on a regular basis before I'll be able to check that out though. I REALLY hate these intermitent gremlins, it seems these only pop up when I'm in a hurry, whenever I've got the time to check things out everything's perfect. If anybody's got any other ideas please lets hear them.

But what about the rest of the starting system?
ground connection for the starter
cap and rotor
coil
plug wires
Re: Intermitent hard starting problem (Diamond Dave)

It turns over really well, the rest checks out too, it runs perfectly all the time, the only time there is a problem is starting.
Re: Intermitent hard starting problem (ABA Scirocco)

trying wiggling the key to see if your ignition switch is the problem, the circuit for the starter is different from the + to the coil, it can be cranking great but if no power reaches the ignition is not going to start and usually the ignition switch failures are intermitent like that
Re: Intermitent hard starting problem (ABA Scirocco)

Is it a really slow cranking sound; like if your battery was almost dead?
Again, I've also had this problem recently. I cleaned up the chassis ground from the battery and the starter. Car starts MUCH easier now.

No, it turns over really well and runs great once it's started.
