So after seeing Armed Escort's latest update... I know we're (us 'murricans i mean) all insanely jealous of his Escort Cosworth... It got me thinking though, is anybody jealous of the big V8 cars and trucks we get here? I know we'd all love to have a Silvia or Skyline GT-R or Civic Type R or Polo GTI or Focus RS or whatever else that they get that we don't...
So do any of you European or Asian Vortexers want a Camaro (I guess it'd have to be used now) or F-350 Super Duty or something?
Sorry if this question's been asked and answered... I think I might've seen it before, but I couldn't find the thread.

I know someone that was stationed in Osaka (?) Japan and he said V8 muscle cars are a big deal over there...apparently there was a local that has a Mustang Cobra and he's the big man on campus over there, so-to-speak

Not really... there are of course fans of all sorts of US cars over here, but in terms of the whole car enthusiasts culture here, I would say it is a pretty small group.
Thats not to say that a lot of people don't admire them or anything - but its probably going a bit OTT saying that they lust after them or are jealous of them.
Its horses for courses really - US cars (especially the more old school kind) just dont work over here so well. The size of our roads, parking spots, garages etc, not to mention the price of petrol - if we could get it as cheap as you guys do then maybe bigger engines would be more attractive. But because we can't, and for other reasons, the addage 'there's no replacement for displacement' doesn't really ring that truly here.
Another major factor is that few proper American cars have been sold here properly and well supported - and those that have haven't sold that well. Factors for this include the fact that they are still LHD, and grossly overpriced when compared to what they cost back in the states.
I think any car enthusiast likes (or should do) any car that is evocative, or has great performance, or prestige, or credentials etc......but more often than not they just aren't suited to here, are expensive to buy and run etc......
For example, I would never contemplate buying a big, large displacement American car here.....but if I were to say, move to the States, then things might be quite different as the car would 'work' better there.

Although I haven't been there (I wish), I believe the impression that American cars have at European auto shows is that basically nobody cares.
If I were in Europe, I'd sure rather be driving a BMW 330d or 530d than anything made here ...

In terms of people thinking about future purchases, I think you are right.
But, as I was saying above, people might look at them and say 'Hey, thats pretty cool' and be impressed by it in some shape or form - maybe simply the novelty factor - but unless it is really ground breaking or special in some way or form it probably wouldnt get too much attention.
If anything, its classic US cars that has a following (that I mentioned above) here really, from what I can tell. I mean, I've seen a few modern Corvettes around before and I know there are some Vipers and stuff - but new stuff is really limited to those who are rich and want a toy thats a bit unusual - footballers, rock stars etc. And who probably have a Rolls/Bentley/BMW/MBZ/Ferrari/Aston/Range Rover etc in the garage too. And then, given the current trend and from watching players arrive at their football clubs (soccer to you guys) it tends to be the big SUVs rather than your sportscars.

Wouldn't big American iron be well suited for the Autobahn though? It seems like a 6 speed Camaro or Impala SS would be very happy there... and considering the 'vette gets 27 mpg on the highway or something like that... well... it doesn't seem nearly as bad. But okay... I was just kinda wondering if the "grass is always greener" mentality was universal, but I guess it isn't? People go to great lengths to get an sr20det imported here, but nobody in Japan is looking for an LS1 to drop in their Fairlady Z huh.

nah, they hate the camaro. i remember reading in CAR once upon a time about it; they have a way with words to show their absolute discust

i'm not jealous of american v8's. if i wanted one, i;d just go buy it. i've owned a good ol t/a before! they just don't suit me now. or should i say, they aren't inside of a car that suits me now.

Well of course you're not jealous... you can walk into a chevy dealership and pick one up whenever you like...
I remember that CAR article about the Camaro too... but you can't use CAR to really judge what the enthusiasts are thinking... cause they hate everything American anyway.
