Some kits don't fit the U.S. bumper, so I've heard you have to get a European bumper. My question is; Is it legal to use the European bumper?
AND
If you use the European bumper and get into an accident, and they find out you had a European bumper, will you be in some hot water?
Thanks

hello? hello?
hello? hello?
So many people have supposedly done this, no one thought about this before they did it?

Now you're getting close to a technicality here. First, your U.S. rebart fits behind the euro bumper, and basically, that's all that really performs in an accident anyway. Granted, you do have to removed the foam, but really, that's a 5 mph or less kinda thing. The real problem is your lack of side markers. Some places can be picky about this, while others would never even notice. Yeah, overall, though, the bumper is illegal, but so are A LOT of things we have on our cars.

Re: Is Euro front bumper illegal in U.S.? (Red_MkIV)

I was more concerned with the 3mph vs. 5mph bumper thing.
I know that 3 or 5mph bumpers probably wouldn't make any real difference in an accident, but i was wondering about insurance coverage if they find out you didn't have the bumpers you were supposed to have.
I'm not worried about the side markers.
How much is a euro bumper? What is involved in the installation. What is included? How long does it take?

Re: Is Euro front bumper illegal in U.S.? (AVW)

Too late, after I read the first sentence I went out and rammed my car into a concrete block wall at 180mph.
You'll be hearing from my lawyer.

Re: Is Euro front bumper illegal in U.S.? (Apocrates)

I'm getting the German bumper installed on my car in a couple of weeks and my body guy said that if I get into an accident the insurance company probably wouldn't pay to replace the front bumper. I don't know how the cops or insurance would know it was aftermarket unless the body shop told them.

You can get a Euro bumper from Momentum for $195 with the foam you have to remove. Or the German bumper is a direct replacement and costs $295. If you have never taken off your front bumper you'd be surprised how easy it is. There's I think three screws in the wheelwells...pop out the black plastic pieces in the bumper...there is I think four other bolts once you pop the plastic pieces out..takes about five minutes.

The two major differences between the NA spec and Euro spec bumpers is the length and the type of reinforcement found behind the bumper. The Euro-spec bumper is about 2.5-2 inches shorter than the NA-spec one, and lacks the thick pieces of foam attached to the slightly thicker rebar. Those are what principally make them 3 mph crumple resistant rather than 5 mph, this obviously has no bearing for higher speed impacts.
Removal of the bumper requires removing 5 screws in either wheel well as well as 3 behind the grill and 2 behind either outer, lower vents.
The Euro-spec bumper is illegal in the USA because it is only 3 mph crumple resistant and it lacks the side marker lights. Obviously it was never crash tested by the DOT, and basically anything not tested by the is illegal on cars in the USA.
Whether or not the law or insurance has anything to say about it depends on which official you speak to...

Illegal Smeegal.
Do you know beyond a shadow of a doubt its illegal?
I mean you can take out the front side markers..they are NOT a requirement.
No one is going to say, HEY! Pull him over..hes got no side markers.
Other cars don't have them so they can't make all the other cars put them on...if you take it off..you take it off.
I mean yea sure there are illegal things..but that is not one of them.
3-5mph isnt that much difference..and if your that concerned about it, go get a smaller piece of foam

Happy Modding

Re: Is Euro front bumper illegal in U.S.? (W0lfsburg4)

Ona side note, 5 point racing harneses are not DOT or SAE approved for new cars in the US or CAN, although they are much safer than standard shoulder belts. I dont think this is an issue of the bumper being legal, but DOT or SAE approved for new vehicle sales. An example of this is the Mclaren F1. To be brought into the states, the headlights had to be changed to sh!tty ones from a cutlass or some such crap car, bumper risers had to be installed, the two side seats removed b/c of their lack of airbags, the 5 point harnes removed and a normal belt installed, and probably a few other that I forget. The point is, that as soon as you bought the car, you could put the OEM lights, bumpers, seats, harnesses etc. back into the car and drive away with the propper plates and insurance.
So again, i think it is just a regulatory bs ploy to keep imports out of the states and canada. Look at all the modded cars we have running around with plates on them. My buddy has an old bug which he torched the roof off of and put 2 plastic seats in it. He can still plate that without any hassel.
But i could and probably am full of bs, so this is just my 2 cents

Re: Is Euro front bumper illegal in U.S.? (djGolfGTI)

Here in Pennsylvania, our inspection stations seem to vary in what they consider legal and illegal. I have both front and rear Euro bumpers. I live in what's known to be one of the pickiest south central PA townships to drive through if you have visible modifications to a car. Our police spend a lot of time visually checking cars! I know it sounds silly.
BUT I have yet to be pulled over for not having front corner markers or Euro bumpers. I haven't had problems during the yearly inspection at any certified inspection facility yet. I got my front bumper after a front corner-to-corner accident I had back in May. Interestingly my insurance company had no problem with letting me get the Euro.
As with many mods, you might have to be willing to accept any hassling, since some parts are illegal.
As far as finding a front bumper, check VolksCafe.com or 1552design.com.
