Is Luxury Package worth it?

1459 Views 25 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  kifil032
My wife and I are about to close on a new 2002 Passat. However, it seems to be next to impossible to find one with Auto, Monsoon and Leather WITHOUT the luxury package. with the price of the luxury package added, the car's price gets to be pretty high and flirting with a base Audi or BMW's range.
We are starting to consider just getting a base GLS Auto or stepping up to an Audi or BMW.
My questions is: Is it worth spending all that money on the leather and Luxury package? Especially since it doesn't even come with power seats? What has your experience been?

If you can be patient; have the fine folks at Hannah VW order your Passat
EXACTLY as you would like it configured...I do this Everyday...If you have any
questions just call or email...

If you don't want the sunroof and the wheels you dont HAVE to get it.
I ordered a gls wagon tip/ leather/ no lux and got it.......if you can wait you can do it............may take about three months to get it...

We got a 2002 GLS V6 auto with luxury pkg, monsoon, cold weather package and homelink. The luxury package is good if you aren't planning to get alloy wheels elsewhere...the alloys are definitely worth the price of the package. And although we didnt think we would necessarily need a sunroof, it has been FUN to have so far! However, if you are going to get leather too, you might look at the GLX if you want a V6. Good luck!

I would rather spend the money on 17" capezio's and not have the roof. Just my opinion. My sunroof makes noise when I go over bumps, and I would rather have bigger alloys to get rid of some of the sidewall flex from 15" tires. I would order the car the way you want it.

Don't forget the rear sunshade that comes as part of the luxury package. It's fantastic if you have little ones - keeps the hot sun off of them. If you've never had a sunroof, after a few rides on a warm day (along the coast) you'll be hooked and can't live without it. You might have to also by a hat though

I would agree that you should order the car as you want it, although I would recommend that you DO NOT purchase it through Dick Hannah. They were the absolute worst dealership I dealt with when purchasing a Honda (back in 99) and attempting to purchase my Passat. Every person I dealt with lied to me.

not really worth it...

I have the luxury package, and have realized I could have done without it. The wheels are the nicest part, but they are holding my snow tires and I have another set that goes on for most of the year.
The sunroof produces an obscene amount of wind noise when the shade is open, so it stays closed 99% of the time.
I have 16% tint all around, so don't really need the rear sunshade...

Worth it! If It's not wholly a budgetary matter.
Re: not really worth it... (davedude)

In my opinion it is not, but it depends on how much you'd like to have a sunroof and alloy wheels. But, you pretty much cannot find luxury without leather - i tried looking in a rdius of 500 miles from where I live (including NYC, Boston, etc...) without any luck. As VWGuild said, you'll have to order it and it takes 2-3 months. You are absolutely right about pricing. THat was my dillema too. I could buy a brand new BMW 325i through European delivery for about $26k without any options except for metallic paint (the leatherette it comes with is great!). But, we needed a wagon and the 325 wagon is too small for us as our main large car, so we got a Passat. We certainly don't regret it. The BMW is just different.

It is worth it just for the steering wheel controls. I love riding the volume on my music!
Re: not really worth it... (hotani)

Have you tried the "big dot" spot on the sunroof dial. This is supposed to be the location for minimal noise. I've found this to be true.

SAVE THE MONEY!!!!!!
NO sunroof=no weird noises
Re: not really worth it... (katphishcatfish)

IMHO. I dont think the sinroof creates any noise at all, at least on my car....but it all depends on how u want your car to be after all its all about you....

sunroof noise

I'm talking about when the sunroof is closed. It is soooo loud! Maybe there is something wrong with mine. I was going about 100 mph one time and opened the shade, not the sunroof - and it sounded like it was open!
My mom has an ES300 and there is no difference between shade open and shade closed. Anyone else notice this (about the passat)?
Re: Is Luxury Package worth it? (jignbobber)

First of all, even with the luxury and leather, the Passat should still be quite a bit lower than the Audi, and especially the BMW. Anyway, I think that the sunroof and wheels will help resale value when, and if, you go to sell it. The reason you can't find too many cars without the luxury package is because most people want it.
Re: sunroof noise (hotani)

I haven't experienced any noise whatsoever from my sunroof when it's closed. When it's open, I put it at the comfort setting where the dot is and it's still fine.
As many others have stated already, you should really make your own decision. Personally, I've always had sunroofs on my cars and I don't see changing in the future. If you can do without it, skip the luxury package. You can get alloy wheels later on your own, if and when you think it's time. Personally, I don't like leather seats so I couldn't get myself to pay extra for that pkg but that's just me.
Whatever you decide on, I think you'll be quite happy with a new B5 (Passat). Good luck and enjoy!

What are you doing with your hands off the wheet at 100mph?
And yes it true, glass conducts sound very well. The shade absorbs a lot of that sound.

Re: sunroof noise (hotani)

I noticed that our glx is alot nicer and as quiet or quieter as mom in law's es300 and at normal speeds the sunroof doesn't add noise.
