The more I drive the car, after fixing little things here and there - I don't plan on getting rid of it. Owning is is essentially free, insurance company added it as an antique car with a fixed value of $14,000 with a $0 deductible. That also covers the windshield and other glass. Ironically, the windshield has a "Miata Club of America" sticker on it, on the passenger side - On the driver side there is an inspection tag from 1997, August was the circle removed. The timing belt was so loose I could change timing and remove the belt with my hand. So that got replaced, alone with all coolant hoses, a
So, to be honest, when I got this I wasn't sure what the plan was with the car. Do I flip it and make a quick buck? Do I sell it and deal with all that nonsense? It costs basically nothing to keep, insurance on it is $120 per year ($60 per 6 month term) and that's with an agreed upon value. I understand it's super slow getting across water, don't do that. It's slow in general, by slow I mean compared to new pickups/jeeps/suv's/sedans all getting to 60MPH in 5, sometimes 4 seconds or less. However, once you get on a two lane road and start forgetting what happened today, the corners eat your feelings, it's wonderful therapy.
I'm happy I got TW200 tires, I've reached out to several local car groups, they do Auto-X local, semi local, and roughly 1-2 hours away. No roll bar necessary but a helmet absolutely is. I'll probably do my best to get some light shoes to wear.
Overall, I like it, the kids like it, it doesn't cost much to keep around. Hell, even if I didn't do anything with it. I am however, at this point, pleased with myself that I did not get thicker sway bars. Let's adjust to one big change at a time.
Anyways, I'm keeping it, I really like it. It would be different if there was a monthly payment, or insurance was ungodly.... But it's, well, kind of the perfect car. Could have grabbed a Mustang or Camaro. Both offer room for seating four humans, but you can't see anything out of them, they're expensive, and so I didn't even look very hard. They're staying with me, I hope, this weekend, at least Friday morning everything gets cleaned up quick and thrown into the back of the heap.
So I guess what I'm saying is I like the car, it has its quirks and features. It's 34 years old, the doors shut with a thud, interior is simple but useful, seats are comfortable, shifter feels great even after 97,xxx miles.
It's a good car.
