Re: Is Mobil1 15-50 bad for 12v VR6s??? (cabriodude2000)

synthetic is definitely not bad for VR6s. My mechanic actually told me that if u use synthetic in a VR, it should be 15w50, and if u use regular it should be 20w50.
I dont use synthetic in my car. When my oil is changed, it seems like it runs the very best with 10w30. and whenever my mechanic puts in 20w50, it seems to run not as good, maybe its just me, and maybe its all this humid air and crap

For a Daily use car i recommend 15w-50 mobil one or Valvoline 20w-50 , The VR^ engine was manufature for use 20w50 u used in my GOLf when i go to the track i change the oil for 10w40 for more easy RPM
is good that you use mobil 1 but the VR6 use 6 QTS.

I tend to favor 15w50 for the summer months. It can get downright hot here in VA, and I remember running 10w30 and my oil pressure read kinda low. I had always remembered hearing/knowing that the VR tends to favor a thicker oil.

i just did a only change on friday and put in 15-50 mobil 1 and my oil temps dropped 10 degrees celcius no bull****. but! my car is new i mean i just got it few weeks ago and didnt really know when the last oil change was or what was put in so i mean it coulda been crappy oil! nevertheless after seeing the decrease in temps so dramatic i swear by this oil now.. its the only thing my car is gonna see spring to fall..

probably gonna drail my fresh oil and put in cheap 30w stuff, it revs much slower and is harder to start w/15 50

VR6 oil change with a new filter will take 6.5 quarts.
If your dip stick tube is broken you should get a new top part to get the correct reading.
you are a quart and a half low on only 5 quarts.
15w50 worked great in my VR6 and will work great when I get te 3.0L running.

Re: Is Mobil1 15-50 bad for 12v VR6s??? (Ikedu)

I think 6.5 is Corrado, I usually put 6 in my GTI and the level is fine. I have yet to change the oil in my C (haven't put that many miles on it since I bought it and PO was a religious Mobil 1 user anway) But comparing bentleys oil capacity is a bit higher on the C? Where does the extra half a quart go? Filters look to be around the same size. Is the filter housing any bigger or different? I guess I'll have to xhage it tomorrow and see for myself
BTW I'll probably put 15w50 in the C, I run 0w40 in my GTI. Temps stay cool and it'll still rev. 15w50 ran about ten degrees warmer in the heat and I could feel a difference in its willingness to rev up. C has 10w30 Mobil 1 in it and when it gets hot (traffic and AC on) oil pressures tend to drop a bit low for my liking. I'll put in the 15w50 and see how she likes it. Should be great, has about double the miles of my GTI so thicker will probably be better.

One more vote for Mobil 1 15W-50 Summer, 10W-30 Winter.

Like he said here.

I use 5w40 full syn and she runs like a dream...

the man knows

5w-40 is the best compromise between 5w-30 (a bit on the thin side when hot) and 15w-50 (which is on the thick side, particularly on cold starts)

15W-50 is fine in the summer months, but it is more viscocity than needed, so you are giveing up some revability, mileage and power for peace of mind.
0W-30 is fine in winter.
0W-40 is fine all the time.
5w-40 is fine all the time.

its official for me at least... 6.5 quarts of castrol 10-30 beat out 5 quarts of mobil1 15-50... with the thinner oil it starts 1st try and revs more freely, and its 3X cheaper. then again i am in canada home of cold summer mornings

Just wait until you try 0/40 or 10/30 .....
.
All of the protection, easier on your seals, better fuel economy, and maybe even a couple of extra ponies freed up. 15/50 is overkill IMHO - even for very aggressively driven street VR6s. FWIW, 0/40 runs about 6-10 degrees F hotter than 10/30 in my VR6, and 15/50 runs hotter than that.
