Is my friend as nuts as i think he is?

Ok, he's got an 87 Turbo Supra that he's dumped a ton of money into. Last winter he had to get the head gasket replaced and a bunch of other stuff done to it. He also got the head ported and polished. THis cost three grand for everything. He's also got a blow off valve, Greddy turbo timer, intercooler, exhaust, etc. He also crashed the car a couple of times, nothing too major but the body panels had to be repaired and now they're two toned color. Along the way he had to take it in for a bunch of repairs, and now he just orderd a set of 4 160 dollar tires. I've always thought he was nuts for dumping this amount of money into his car. It's got a 140, 000 miles on it, and he drives it hard everyday. He ran the car last summer and was able to pull a 13.9 out of it after a bunch of runs. Am i the only one that thinks that's an awful lot of money to be spending on a car with that many miles that only ran a 13.9. The car feels fast, and a 13.9 isn't bad at all, but damn, thats a lot of money! I can't see the engine holding up under that much stress for that many more miles.

Yeah. He's nuts.
Well... on second thought I don't know if I'd call him nuts, but I don't think he's wise with his $.

its a passion....if he loves the car, he loves the car...as for being nuts, yea, anyone who spends an insane amount of money on anything is always a little nuts.....including me..

Whats his car payment? Most likely ZERO so why not throw some cake at it to keep it running if he likes it. I have a 25k car that im still paying for that has 10k in mods on it......now that is NUTS.

yeah but my whole theory is its not worth the money because the car isn't going to last with that much abuse thrown at it. It's not like he had the engine balanced, blueprinted, and beefed up, aside from the port and polish the internals are completely stock. That much boost and that much abuse on an engine with a lot of miles on it, driven everyday seems like a lot...i dont know maybe i'm wrong?

What he's doing sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Its an old Supra Turbo. What else are they good for other than having fun with?

Is it his only car? And even if it is, if he has that much money to spend on it, chances are he's pretty secure financially. Hell, if I had the money, my car would turbo'd and have a whole mess of other stuff. I say "Go Supra!"

Those inline sixes in the SUpra take tremendous amounts of abuse and are remarkably stout. A friend of mine had an 82 MkII Supra that he sold a couple of years ago. 16 years and 550,000 kms later. Sure, he had to dump money in it every now and then for repairs and wear items, but it still ran pretty strong. Plus, after having no payments for 11 years, he put over 50 percent down on a brand-new E36 M3, so I guess I can't fault him! He plans to keep that car for 15 years. He might have the right idea - spend the bucks on something you know you will like and that will last, and keep it for a long time...

my friend is far from financially stable. he's a college student who works ten hours a week. he's in debt up to his ass!
