Is Sport Lux Package worth the money for a Jetta 1.8t? How about the price?

I'm would like to know if the Sport Lux pkg. is really worth while? I like the idea of the 17" wheels, but just how much stiffer would the ride be compared with just the stock suspension? I'm not really into racing or modding the car, so this is more of an appearane issue. I'm looking at a 2002 1.8t with leather, monsoon, and either the plain lux pkg or sport lux. With the sport lux option, dealer quoted $23,575. what do you all think of that price. Thanks

If you like the look of the wheels, I'd say the sport lux package is worth the money. But if you were going to put aftermarket wheels on I'd save your money for that. Otherwise, its a good deal considering the cost of those tires.
If you're worried about the ride, just test drive one. I haven't found 17's to provide a noticably worse ride than the factory 16s.

Thanks! Unfortunately, the dealer doesn't have any jettas with the sport lux pkg on the lot. I'm probably not going to do the aftermarket wheel thing.

the 17's are nice, and doesn't the package also include a sunroof? I love my sunroof
The ride is a wee bit firmer than with the 16's.
two http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif for the upgrade though!

I didn't think so. I drove both and honestly didn't notice a difference. The sport lux gives you different springs and wheels/tires. I think that something else is stiffer or thicker too, but am not sure what exactly it is. I went with the reg lux package and am very happy.
On another note, if I were you I would think twice before getting the Monsoon. Listen to both before ploping down the ~$300 and assuming it will be better. I didn't think so. Search around this forum and the Car Audio Forum to see the comments about it. The 2002s are supposed to be especially bad. I don't have the monsoon and am VERY happy with my double din.

The "Sport" suspension is a joke, but if you aren't going to be upgrading anything it's still better than the regular suspension. It might be worth the money though for the 17's if you aren't going to get aftermarket wheels. But don't expect the handling of the sport suspension to be worth anything.

I got mine for $22,800 plus tax title and license. Basically $100.00 over invoice. The 17" long-beaches are nice the ride is not bad at all. The spring / shock combo sucks for anything other than comuting though.

Hi Guys!
I got 2002 Jetta 1.8T sport lux, monsoon, leather ..... sticker was 23,500 .... dealer sold it to me for 22,000 .... which is about 3% above invoice (excluding the holdback).
I think it is reasonable .. and good target price you should go for.
By the way ... I love the wheels and all the extras ... looks very sharp .. waited about 2 months for it though. Good luck!!!

ya even if you get the monsoon the new style headunits supposedly aren't that good (I have an older style in my HU) and you'll want to replace it when the adapters are available. But if you do get a monsoon you'll still have a 200w amp and beefed up speakers.

My first offer was $22,300. The salesman acted as though I was really out of the park on that. Anyway, VW credit did offer 5.9% on the loan for 48 months. I can't believe that they beat my bank rate of 6.5%. I'll have to haggle more. I'm in no hurry

Yea I ordered a 1.8t Jetta GLS 2k2 modem, reflex silver, sport, leather, sunroof, monsoon, everything you can get, even a spoiler, cd player, for 21,500 out the door. I am just waiting for it to get here on the truck.

YES, get it, I still regret sitting on these ugly 15" wheels

The Longbeaches are too nice!

I am going to go for the sport pkg, i think
. Now I'm wavering on the Monsoon. Did a search and there are many unhappy folks out there with problems with that system. I may decide to live on the edge and get it, though
. I really need to just make a decision and stick with it. I just sold my car (93 cougar) to an old lady! She is pretty sharp and spry for someone in their 70's!! (hope I'm that way when I get there)

Anyway, all this feedback is much appreciated http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif ! The dealer price includes tax and all, so it may not be that bad, but still must counter offer and see how that goes. There are always other VW dealerships to go too, but they are a bit of a drive for me. But at least if I get a better elsewhere, I can always take it to the closer dealership for service.

I think the 17's would look good on the car. I think that I'll try to stay with the VW options because I already have one money sucking hobby--my computers!! (Firewire harddrives are coolhttp://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif .)

i haven't heard the non-monsoon sound system
but my monsoon is very bass-deficient. i wish i could turn that bass knob another full circle to get the bass i want...
Re: Is Sport Lux Package worth the money for a Jetta 1.8t? How about the price? (boilerman)

I actually wanted the non-sport luxury package, but the only GLS they had in red included it. Right now I've got them at $22,000 (before tax, license), but I think I can do better (around $21,500 or less).
Apparently, the "sport" suspension doesn't really do all too much. The kit (available from your dealer) from Eibach is supposed to be a much better improvement.
If I had the choice, I'd go without sport luxury and instead buy aftermarket. but I will be paying for the car for a while, so I can't afford that

that's something to keep in mind...

It all depends on what your future plans for your car are.
If you are a mod fiend, or think you might be in the future, don't spend $600 for the 17" wheels and tires. I did and now I regret it. The car looks great but I dont want it to look like everyone elses, and now I am thinking about replacing them. I could have gotten the sport packange and luxury package for less and spent that money on nice 17" or 18" rims and than bought tires.
www.edmunds.com this is a great site for car buying. Don't pay over TMV- true market value.
Here is a comparison

Right now I am at $503 below edmunds TMV. I think I can do better. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Is Sport Lux Package worth the money for a Jetta 1.8t? How about the price? (boilerman)

IMO, it's woth it b/c you get the 17" wheels and tires that would cost you much more in the aftermarket. Buy the car with all the options you want. It's worth the wait. The Monsoon is not as bad as others make it sound. It's not a competiton stereo, but it's got very good sound quality. The Sports Suspension will not satisfy the true enthusiast. The car handles nice, but there's too much body roll in steep turns. I had a 94 Saturn SL2 with an aftermarket strut bar and larger rear sway bar that handled like a go kart compared to the Jetta! I'm considering Eibach's in the spring to get some more responsive handling as well as get rid of the factory "lift-kit"....BTW, I got mine for about $22,500 back in Nov '01 with 3.9% for 48 months...

Taking the plunge this week. Jetta GLS, auto, Leather , sport lux and monsoon. And after researching the price, it seems to me to be a decent offer (auto trans adds $1075 to the sticker,). I'm excited about owning my first VW
, but not about parting with my $$$$$$$$
