is the 2.0 worth fixig up?

680 Views 23 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  ernisill
ok, the other night i was leaving work and my boss asked me if i wanted to race his girlfriends neon that he was driving, so i did...and i lost...bad, i mean i know my car is bone stock but it still killed me, not to mention the neon was an auto...now what i want to know is can i make the 2.0 a decent performer without spending thousands on turbo's or SC's? or should i just not mess with it and have a good reliable car? sorry for the newbie question but i have no clue what to do, any help/suggestions welcome, thanks

youre really gonna have to turbo it sorry dude. cuz all motor would probably end up being more and still not as fast

i was thinking the same thing because i got blown out by another stock golf! go figure, but anyways, after some research i have concluded that it really doesnt matter what you do to a 2.o, it wont be really fast until you throw in a SC or a turbo. i mean what can you do? chip, cams, camshaft, intake, bore out this and that, exhaust and you still at less than 200hp and a vtec si civic will probably still beat you give he has all the same mods, maybe even less, maybe not, but anyways i myself am not touching my engine until i can afford a SC or a vr6 swap, ill just work on aerodynamics and flashy nice stuff until then.

agreed....but i think any car is worth fixing as long as you have a passion for doing so for yourself.....

even if you turbo it, its still not gonna be really fast. a vr6 with a turbo will burn you lilke no other, even though both you guys spent the same modding your engines

This neon a R/T?
Re: is the 2.0 worth fixig up? (Gaki)

Turbo 2.0L will get into the 14s and some even the 13s. The neuspeed charger is not really the way to go if you want it to be a street screamer.
Your best bet is to do a VR6 swap or 1.8t swap.
Re: is the 2.0 worth fixig up? (pyschovr6)

no the neon was'nt an R/T, thanks everyone for the help, just out of curiosity how much does a VR6 swap cost on average? it's pretty unlikely i'll go to that much trouble, unfortunatly i'm prob gonna end up buying a new car in the next 6 months or so, which will suck cause the tex is figgen awesome, but we'll see, again thanks everyone

For about $700 you can purchase a chip, a good 2.25 inch aluminized exhaust and a Neuspeed 268 or Autotech 270 cam. These items won't make you #1 at the drags . . . but you will pick up about 20% putting you up to roughly 135-140HP. These are tride and true improvements that will make a noticable change in the attitude of your car. Pick up an inexpensive suspension (lets say from Weitec about $400) and a short shift kit for$50 and your total expense might be $1300 plus labor. The end result will be a car that is a blast to drive and cheap to maintain. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

IMO: not really. well, only if you wanna go all out. you can spend $1500 on chip, cams, intake, exhaust, and it will not be fast - it will be faster than it was, but nobody's gonna go wow. I would spend the money on chassis tuning, and looks, since a 2.0 is a great handling car.
Re: is the 2.0 worth fixig up? (ernisill)

It sucks man, I'm going thru the same thing. I get so sick of seeing cars with a minimal amount of tuning done to them just walking away. No, I am not racing. But from watching cars accelerate from stop lights, and seeing as they are mostly stock vehicles, really makes me wonder why I continue to spend money. I have been looking for something with a bigger engine so that I will at least have the power. I think the 2.0 is a fine motor, and it is very strong. A minimal amount of suspension work will make for a very good handling vehicle. But as for speed, it's just not going to happen.

"... a decent performer without spending thousands..." Come on now guys, an OBD1 car will respond well with a $100 chip a $250 exhaust and $200 cam. No, it won't be fast car, but it will be a "decent performer" for a small investment of $550 or so. Sounds like Ernisill is thinking about straying from the VW scene if he doesn't get some encouragement, I would hate to see that happen without him tapping into the potential of the OBD1 2.0 .

Re: is the 2.0 worth fixig up? (ernisill)

I have an AST 270 cam, TT exhaust and an AMS chip in my car along with some other stuff in my OBD1 Golf. While it's not the fastest thing on the road and I don't look for races, I refuse to let some Neon walk away from me. My car pulls strongly all the way to redline, but I shift at 5800 rpm (anything above that is a waste).

ok, i think i'm gonna try the exhaust/cam/chip combo and see how it feels b/c a reliable car thats fun to drive is exactly what i'm looking for, i dont know a whole lot about cams though, do most of you guys install your own? or is it something that has to be done by a professional (not to say alot of you are'nt pro's
) thanks alot for the help, you should all be hearing from me soon http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I installed mine on my own and had never done one before. I must admit that I have watched a friend of mine do one before (1.8L 8V) and I have done some motor cycle cams before. If you are mechanically inclined and have the needed tools then you "should" be able to do it on your own.
Oh by the way..."I accept no liability for any work done by a non-professional"

I have done everything except a cam so far by myself. When I go for a cam, I am going to have my sponsor watching over my shoulder.
