I am looking to purchase tires for my 1996 Passat GLX with stock rims. The OE size is 215/50-15. There are not many options for this size. The Dunlop SP5000s sound good. But, what I was wondering was:
Would it be possible to put on a 225/50-15 onto these rims?
If so, would it increase or decrease performance? I found this size locally in michelin tire for a reasonable price. What do you think?

Re: Is this tire size ok? Not OE Spec. 96 Passat GLX (dg001)

OE size for Passat GLX is 215/50-15 IIRC. (10mm wider than the GTI VR6 tires that came on my car). Up 10 more mm won't make a big enough difference to worry about...

Re: Is this tire size ok? Not OE Spec. 96 Passat GLX (Surf Green)

My mistake. I realize that the OE size is 215/50-15. The first was a typo on my part. Will the extra 10mm benefit or harm my performance? Will this even fit on my rims????
Thanks

Ok, done. I am not sure what I am to get out of this. The size is not listed under the passat. Does this mean that this is not a reccomended size for this rim? If it does fit, whould there be any performance benefits or concerns? Is there a concern of tire to fender contact?
Thanks

Re: Is this tire size ok? Not OE Spec. 96 Passat GLX (dg001)

Your rims are 15x6, not 15x6.5 like GTi's and Jetta GLX's. The tire will fit your wheel but the sidewalls will be a little "pinched" or bent inward. This tire is not only wider but taller by four tenths of an inch. This added height doesn't sound like much but it will change your final drive ratio. The end result will be a slower car off the line and a speedo that reads slower then you are actually traveling. The wider tire will also have a tendency to "swim" or "roll" on the rim do to the width of the tire compared to the rim. I'm sure the tire will clear out back but not as confident in front clearence. Should you be changing size for a greater choice of tires and to save a couple bucks . . . I would recommend 195/55-15's, I know they are narrower, but they are the same height (23.44) as the 215/50-15 so no speedo error, no clearence questions, no performance loss, and no handling changes. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
