I tried posting this before, and it seems not have gone through--forgive me if its a double post!
I was looking through the carsdirect pricer at Jettas. The glx 24 valve with
destination comes to $27,375! That's only about $500 less than a 325i.
Granted, the jetta has a few more features, BUT the standard bmw suspension
is probably better than the jetta's anyways, and adding a sunroof or the
premium package only addas about $1 to $2k.
I'm curious whether other people think that this pricing strategy is too much.
I just can't see buying a Jetta when I could get a bimmer for a hair more,
or an is300, or an A4 (the 4 cylinder with manual starting at under $25k,
leaving money left over for options!).
Your ideas?

I agree......I think the price is getting a little high unless they clean up their quality control issues.

Ditto. No way I'd pay 28k for a Jetta (unless it was loaded with 4mo, but that's not gonna happen in the states). I'd be in the bimmer in a heartbeat.

Agreed. I saw a GLX today, and it looked sweet, but cant you get a new Z for around that figure? At least the lower end models... sheesh.
Just another reason to go 1.8T!

That isn't even the out the door price. Add tax, tags etc. We are talking $30K for a Jetta.

Re: Jetta IV GLX 24 valve: $27,375!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (CBJ)

Where the hell do you guys live? 27,000 !!! My friend bought a Passat (02) 1.8T for 24,000 with a lot of options! I got a deal on a 02 1.8T, fully loaded with tax and APR it was 23,456 dollars!!! (GTI), i could also get a VR6 for less than that. I asked about the 24V VR6 and they said that the MSPR is 20,000 something but it will go for like 22-23K, and i did see a 12V GLX (02) for 24,000 fully loaded auto. Thats in Clifton and East Rutherford, NJ.

It is very likely that you will see the current VW models start climbing in price. Volkswagen has made no secret of their strategy to compete against Mercedes Benz vehicles in short time. Witness the launch of the Phaeton a direct shot at the luxury German sedan market.
What will likely happen is that the Jetta will start being positioned as less expensive alternative to the 3-series or C-Class. The Golf will likely go up against their Compact class. As the Jetta & Golf move upscale, it is likely that VW will either abandon the low-end market in North America or bring over a European model to fill the gap.
Although it is difficult for us to justify $27K for a Jetta, it's purely perception. Not less than 10 years ago, many folks laughed when Toyota launched Lexus and asked $40K for their cars. Now it's par for the course. It's not hard to imagine VW making the jump, they have the styling, the handling and the German pedigree.
Thanks,
Peter

Re: Jetta IV GLX 24 valve: $27,375!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (VRSICKVW)

I noticed a white 24v GLX at a dealer and the total with destination was $27,775 from what I remember. That's a boat load of money.
According to CarsDirect.com, MSRP on a fully load Accord V6 4-door is $25,740.
Just priced a loaded '02 Jetta GLX on CarsDirect.com with California emissions. Came to $28,225. Crazy.

Its a $27K car because its an auto transmission...which is priced at $1075, up from $850~. Everyone here drives manual so it comes down to $26k for a 24v VR6! Some good

Re: $27,375!

That's BS!!!

No Jetta or GTI is worth that kind of cash. It's the old 12V motor with 24V heads and better high rpm breathing so all of the sudden it's gonna sell for another $4k or something like that?

VW is pricing itself against competition with less quality problems (that aren't Mexican-built).
It's a great selling point however; for the 1.8T!
