A friend of mine is trying to decide on the following: Purchase a fully loaded 2002, TIPTRONIC Jetta that comes with nice 18" rims, Remus Catback exhaust, Eibach springs, and a very rare dark grey (almost gunmetal) type of a color ($27,000). Or: A fully loaded 5 SPEED 2002 GTI ($22,000). Luckily for him the money difference is not an issue. He's leaning toward the Jetta because it comes with the rims etc. and with in a short period after his purchase his "project" (Chip, DP, BOV,) will be done. He is hesitant with the Jetta however, because it's tiptronic.
The GTI on the other hand will take him longer to "hook up" because he would have to buy rims, suspension, exhaust etc. as well (whereas the Jetta is already equipped with this). He likes the GTI because it's stick.
I've told him that he should go for the GTI, even though the Jetta comes with this incredible, and rare package. - There's nothing manual IMHO, and unfortunately I learned the hard way by buying an automatic!
So what would you get assuming money is not an issue?
EDIT: Guys I guess I misexpalined something. B/C both cars will be financed, it's not like he can buy the GTI for 22 instead of the Jetta for 27 and invest the extra 5 grand in mods. He will have about $1500 to spend on mods up front and that's it - he's done.
BTW: You can check out the car here - http://www.quickvws.com/Plat_jetta.html

Re: Jetta w/ 18's Remus, and Limited edition paint job or GTI? (turbocharged)
GTI....why???
because for that 5 grand that he is saving he can get 18's and coilovers, and other mods
on the other hand, u got that rare color, but.....i would take the stick
Re: Jetta w/ 18's Remus, and Limited edition paint job or GTI? (Zuber Speed)
i have to agree, build the car yourself, its jus more fun and you feel more than proud. its nice to know you were behind that car http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif , plus im a lil bias since i have a GTI...oh yea its different....but its gettin popular....

I say Jetta! I don't want that rare Platinum Grey car falling into the hands of a non-enthusiast. Plus, everything is already loaded on it, with a factory warranty! I'm not sure if the Tiptronic chips are out for the Jetta yet, but I am sure they will be. Jetta.

if the loan is coming from a bank, you can easily get a loan for more than the car, for mods, if he has good enough credit...

I'd first make a decision between a hatchback and a sedan... then I'd start looking for the car I really want!! Don't EVER buy a car because it's right there in front of you.... You'll regret it!!
HAVE PATIENCE!!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Re: Jetta w/ 18's Remus, and Limited edition paint job or GTI? (1.8Trippin)
I'd say the GTI. I personally like Jettas better but
1. modding a car is half the fun.
2. Automatics suck
3. That rare color (which is real nice) as the link says may become a production color
4. Those 18in's on the Jetta are alright looking. (I'd rather buy a set of used ones.)
Re: Jetta w/ 18's Remus, and Limited edition paint job or GTI? (turbocharged)
Ya that Platinum Grey Jetta is at my friends dealer ship, I would rather have the Jetta than a GTI becuase of the Platinum Grey paint and the 18's and its lowered.

You would think that this dealer would add some mods to the GTi for him and add that into the loan price. They seem like a real cool dealership, Gunther if I remember correctly. Tell him to run that by his salesman. Add in some 18s and tires of his choice and install some springs and shocks.
