• JKREW's 20th Anni Interior in a Can Mod •

The "JKREW 20th Anni. Interior in a Can" Mod
Special note: This has been done before so I give props to the few who had the balls to do this in the first place.

Project car:
2000 VR6 GTI with no a-pillar airbags
Total Cost:
10 cans of [email protected] 4 bucks = 40 bucks
2 cans on [email protected] 2 1/2 bucks = 5 bucks
2 band-aids = free
Time spent:
disassembly = 1.5 hours
dye = 5 hours
paint = 1.5 hours
assembly = 1 hour
Tools used:
Snap-on pick set
5/16 socket
8mm socket w/ extension
needle nose pliers
phillips screwdriver
snap-on interior pry bar (or carpet wedger)
tarp
tape
time

Lets get started here...
Before shots:

Disassembly:

With a pick, pry off the cap on the sunvisor.

Pull out visor mounting bracket andf disconnect wires.

Pry out sunroof motor control cover.

Pry off light control plastic from the front to unhinge the clear plastic.

Unscrew two screws.

Unscrew one screw holding the pansy sunvisor.

Pry out the vanity light. THE CLEAR PLASTIC DOES NOT COME OFF.
Pry the whole thing out or you will break the plastic like I did.

Unbolt the seatbelts with a 5/16 (I think) socket.

At back of car, pry off headliner piece. There are two metal retainer clips on either
end and three plastic clips in the center. Don'tlose them as the either stick in the car
or slide off the fabric piece.

Close up of clip.

With torx driver, unscrew one screw on plastic molding.

Pry parcel shelf to side.

Use 8mm socket to remove two speed screws.
Remove all of the pillar pieces. They are held on by quick release plastic socket things.
Just pull right off.
NOTE: AIRBAG PILLARS USE CAUTION AND GET SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
ON HOW TO REMOVE!

With pillar pieces removed, the headliner will just come right off after you remove the grab handles
which have two screws apiece.

With headliner loose, now you can unlatch the side lights held by a clip.

Raise up headrest to hold the headliner up.

To remove the moonroof panel, open your sunroof all the way open. Pry up the white retaining clip and slide the cover all the way out.

YAY! Time to have a beer and then cry when you look at your $25k car which is now gutted.

DYING THE PIECES

I used this fabric dye. It's not too shabby but you have to get the fabric really
covered which takes time and a good ability to paint well to get things even.
Especially with the headliner as it was a large piece.
Go slow and take your time. LOTS OF SMALL COATS.

With the headliner, try to spray vertically so the paint stays even.
I pryed mine up with a broom.

All done.
PAINTING THE PLASTIC PIECES
Now, I know.Painting the plastic is ghetto but then I thought, how often do I use the
rear lights and the sissy visor and a few other pieces? I might as well save
some cash and p[aint those suckers and just buy the remaining pieces from VW.

That's a lot of plastic.

Clean the pieces thouroughly and let them dry. Then mask off the electronics.

Slap the smallpieces in a beer bottle so you can work with them easily.

Nice work JKREW!

FINISHING UP
Now I'm sure all of you are like "Dude, that stuff has got to stick to all hell right?
Yeah, it sure as hell does. BUT, if you go buy some of that Ozium stuff at the local parts store
and spray it on the pieces, the smell is INSTANTLY neutralized!

Just don't inhale the spray in or you will die or something. It's pretty toxic and has a warning label.
PUTTING IT ALL BACK TOGETHER
Note: All of the remaining white pieces will be replaced with 20th pieces as soon as they come in the mail from VW.

Put everything back in reverse order, have a beer, and then strut yer stuff.

Great write-up http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Did you just leave the light-up icons covered? Or did you uncover them?

Re: (Voodoo.T)

Mine actually didn't light up but I intend to buy the real deal 20th piece when I have the cash. I had an extra light set lying around so I really had nothing to lose.

not feelin the black w/ white handles..ect..
But if all was black... HOTT

No I totally agree. I have most of the black 20th plastic parts on order from VW.
The white on black looks goofy as all hell but it's all temporary

Re: (TANiK)

yeah, the mirror is really easy to paint, I was just tired as poo. I need one more day to dye the weather stripping and then paint the mirror and i will be done except for the white pieces I need to replace out down the road as money permits.

Re: (TANiK)

Just paint the plastic pieces flat black.
But remember, anything that moves or gets touched by you will be scratched down the road and look like ass.
