Former McLaren Racing CEO Jost Capito has been named managing director of Volkswagen's R GmbH performance brand and its Zubehör GmbH accessories brand.

Capito formerly led VW's racing division, where he helped the automaker win three consecutive World Rally Championship titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He re-joins Volkswagen after a short stint as the CEO of McLaren Racing - a position he left shortly after now ousted McLaren team boss Ron Dennis' departure late last year.

Capito succeeds Ulrich Riestenpatt gt Richter in the position, who had been leading VW's performance and accessories divisions since 2009. Riestenpatt gt Richter became the plant manager at VW's Osnabrück factory late last year and also held the role of Speaker of the Management Board and Managing Director, Technical, of Volkswagen Osnabrück, positions he held simultaneously with his other responsibilities.

A long career in motorsports makes Capito a good fit to head up VW's R division. He got his start at Volkswagen Group in 1989 when he took a job within Porsche's racing department before moving on to manage the Sauber Formula 1 team from 1996 to 2001. He then moved to Ford where he was responsible for its motorsports ventures and performance vehicles, re-joining VW as the Director of Motorsports for the VW brand in 2012.

Capito is effective in his new position immediately.
