Ok here is the deal
Model 1988 GTI 16V [USA]
On Sunday evening I sanded some of my throttle body down, took the 4 plug wires out and intake boot off. Sealed everything back up started her up she would stumble and sound like a miss, car wouldn't stay alive unless 3/4th's gas. Car would die if foot off gas
Monday my mechanic [Lothar] replaced dist cap-rotor both of them were burnt up and spring as well, pulled plugs they were black as hell, which leads me to believe that my mixture was off. I had hooked Julia up to the multimeter and got a reading of 11 and maybe that whole time the reading was off cause of my OXY sensor?
Why my fuel mixture was off was could be because of my OXY sensor, he pulled it both 2 wires in the sensor itself were sheared, replaced the sensor/oil change-filter/fuel filter change/replaced spark plugs.
Car started up fine; he then tinkered with the fuel mixture trying to figure out why the car sounded like it was missing maybe it was too rich maybe it was too lean.
About 3 months ago I had my airflow meter housing drilled out, he found metal shavings on the sensor plate, and he cleaned them up.
So we go to today I get their, they took the car around the block car was fine, I took the car out 1st gear shift to 2nd gear, go WOT 5k rpms hear a loud BANG, followed by blue smoke out the exhaust a ton of blue smoke, coasted down to a halt. At idle the car would smoke, as throttle increased blue smoke would increase. Now onto something’s to figure out why we have blue smoke, and why my car is down on power.
Ran a compression test
215/210/215/210 across the board
Spark plugs-ok color light brown
Oil level ok
Water ok, no backpressure coolant
New oxy sensor/fuel filter/fuel mixture set in the ballpark.
Head gasket small leak to outside rear of engine.
Took a fiber optic scope and found some shiny pin mark impurities on piston top 3, piston tops are dry no oil.
About this crankcase ventilation breather hose, does this thing use a valve for pressure release, what if that valve busted and oil is now being sucked through the manifold but then again the pistons are dry?
So basically I am asking, and he ask's to figure out maybe brainstorm what happened, and where to look for now, I will be printings this out and giving it to him. Who knows maybe this is the end of Julia I sure as hell was blessed with a freak for the past year though. We talked for hours and still have no friggin clue what the fudge is going on?

Edit as of now car starts up FINE, car REVS up FINE. Thing is she smokes like a bitch, what the fudge was that loud bang, and the car seems down on power as well wtf

Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

is it possible that the 2 connectors on the fuel distributor are switched?
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (eastcoastdubs)

maybe Julia wants a bigger a$$ via a 2.0L 16v bottom end

ok blue smoke which means you burnin oil? bad piston rings with one of the cylinder with the bad compression?

Have faith, man.
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

215/210/15/210 across the board
If these numbers are accurate you trashed cylinder 3.

typo my bad
that should read
215/210/215/210
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

have you checked the breather hose? You could have sucked the filter element through the engine and it got stuck in the CC.
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

how about severe fuel contamination? it's probably worth just changing the fuel filter for kicks? the problem kinda sounds fuel related, something thats radically throwing off the mixture. i'm assuming the fuel block is OK? jeez, this one is really tough. isn't that a low mile car?
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

stem seals are kaput!!!!
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

It sounds to me like if got overfilled with oil, classic mistake, when they are overfilled it shows up at high revs.
Run the engine and see if it clears.
Hopefully it hasn't damaged the converter and coated the new 02 sensor, if the smoke does clear the cat and 02 should be tested.

Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (Blitz16v)

One time when I had Julia I overfilled her with oil by only about a half a quart and she smoked like mad! Then I changed the oil, changed the air filter (which had oil in it) and it was fine. It sucks oil back through the PCV valve. You can thank the EPA for this ingenious device.
Now... with the "bang" you heard, well, that could be a bad sign. Could be a valve or some related part went south...
If that's the case, your mechanic should have the sense to be able to figure it out though. That's basic engine mechanics stuff. Does he have the car or do you? Did he have the head off of the car??
I'll emphasize that 16v's are VERY sensitive to oil LEVEL. If you overfill even as little as 1/2 quart, at high RPM's the suction from the engine will suck oil through the PCV and into the intake and then it will smoke like a mosquito truck... been there, done that. It doesn't take much overfilling. If you put in 5 quarts, you put in too much. If the paper air filter is soaked with oil, that's a pretty darn good sign that you've got too much oil in it. If it just has some small traces, that's probably fine... To be quite honest, when I had the car I seriously considered putting on a K&N breather in place of that P.O.S. PCV system... but you need PCV to pass smog in most populated areas (i.e. NY or Houston).
Let me know how it goes w/ Julia... I think she'll be fine.

Julia has a list of replacement parts in the past 4 years that exceeds the amount that either Jon or I paid for the car itself! The previous owner had a ton of things done and I had a lot done as well. The engine and tranny are two things that are probably original. Things that are not include all belts & hoses, radiator, steering rack, at least one brake caliper, all 4 pads, distributor cap/rotor, plugs, wires (Neuspeed), clutch (with stock flywheel lightened by shop), intake boot (on fuel distributor), miscellaneous bearings, main oil seals, etc. I don't even know what all, and I know that Jon's had a few things done to it since I had it.
I guess I'm pretty proud that the engine has held out as well as it has. Hopefully this is a minor issue that can be fixed pretty easily and without a major overhaul of any kind. If it does require a major overhaul, well, hopefully you can get funding to do it right. I sure hope it doesn't need it though.
Best wishes,
Michael

Wasn't it Dr Tyrell in Blade Runner that said the flame that burns twice as strong burns half as long?
Re: Julia needs brainstorming please help!!long story (torque_steer)

you should drop your oil pan and take a peek to see if there is metal fragments if not than its the top end good luck
