Just bought a 1986 Golf and have a question...

I bought this car just to drive around until the rabbit gets fixed, but the oil light always comes on, even after i put oil in it, what kind of light is it? whats it warning me of?

couple of things it could be. oil too thin (i usually run 20w50 in the summer), oil pump dead, or bad pressure sensor.
