its got a new head on it so it should have a new belt and tensinor like the recipt says. so just oil then? whats good in mk2? im thinking of the high milage valvolene oil. i hear its good for the bearings and stuff even for new motors

I'm a buddy of Gared's and we gave it a good look .. The motor is just about brand new! Completely new head, all gaskets, belts, etc. The motor will run a long, long time.
The only downfall of the car is a few bends in the lips and some "hidden" door dings. Otherwise, the car is in phenominal condition. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Depends on where you live and the climate in your area. Doesn't hurt to try the Valvoline stuff but I have a 1990 2.0 16v Jetta GLI that has near 180K on the odo and here in sunny So Cal, I use nothing but Castrol GTX 20w50 all year round. Nothing special...just regular heavy weight oil...I've never even tried synthetic but have seen NO problems at all. The 16v engine love 20w50 oil if the outside temperature is hot otherwise a good 10w40 or 15w40 will do.
Other things to look at is the water pump and the coolant system. If you need to change the water pump, you might as well do a complete coolant system flush and install G12 coolant (the pink stuff from the dealer) along with a bottle of RedLine Water Wetter to cool things down. While you have the water pump out, swap the stock thermostat for a lower temperature 176 degree F thermostat and lower temp fan switch which should help keep your engine cool. Flush out all of the power steering fluid and replace it with either factory fluid which can be pretty expensive, or you can get by with Valvoline Syn Power fluid which I have been using for over 3 years with no problems. Eventually you will also want to change out your brake fluid for fresh new fluid as well. Make sure the transmission fluid has been changed otherwise you need to do that ASAP. Overall just worry about the normal maintainence stuff for now and when the engine is running well, then you can look into more performance mods.
