well after about 2hrs of swearing up a storm trying to get the second cable arm off the ball joint.... it's finally in...
so here goes. the front and back throw is now slightly shorter than it was. the best way to describe it is that it feels like the stick needs to go a little bit further to get into gear. the side to side motion is not affected by this at all. over all the stick feels a little bit tighter and shorter... it has a nice feel to it. and it feels a little less sloppy than before.
was it worth it? well considering i only paid $40 plus shipping for the part i would have to say yes. not to mention i know a little bit more about how the shifter and transmission works. i had to take the air box out but that was pretty much a breeze and i didn't bother taking out the battery because it didn't look like it would have given me any more of an advantage. if everything goes as planned it's a half an hour job at most. i had a tough time getting the right angle underneath the right hand ball joint off. i finally used a pair of angled pliers to pry it off rather than trying to fit the 13mm wrench underneath..
tip: make sure when you put the new short shifter on that the teeth line up correctly.
just my 02 cents

Oh and I am not a newbie, just a perfectionist. I know how to do it, more or less, but like to hear when someone has already done it, so I know I am doing it exactly right.

This is for the Audi TT shifter linkage, which as we all know is identical to the autotech short shifter except for the powdercoating..
In any case, here's my How-to.

Re: just finished install of Autotech's short shift kit.... REVIEW (RVs021.8T)

let me start by saying i followed Autotech's directions specifically with the exception of using the wrench pictured below to get the second arm off the ball joint as i wasn't able to get the correct leverage with the 13mm wrench. i am in no way liable for any damage that might be caused by anyone using any tool other than what is mentioned in Autotech's directions.
ok here's some pics with a little more explaination....
first using a 13mm open ended wrench pry off the arm off ball joint "A"...
1=where to put the wrench
2=direction to pry it off

second using the same 13mm wrench pry off the arm "B" from the other ball joint...
1=where to put the wrench
2= which way to pry it off (straight up towards you)

if the 13mm wrench doesn't work, then grab the ball joing with the pliers shown here..

use extreme caution as to not destroy the plastic housing for the ball joint.
then using a 13mm socket with extension arm... take off nut "C".. then pull straight up and jiggle the shifter a little to get it to come loose. be careful not to damage the plastic guide "D" in the process. take particular notice to how the plasitc guide fits on the shifter.

before putting the new shifter on take notice to the flat spot in the gearlike grooves on the shifter. that flat spot has to line up with the teeth on the part on tranny as well otherwise it won't go on and you will probably have problems getting in and out of gear.

i hope all of this helps some.
good luck,
James

Re: just finished install of Autotech's short shift kit.... REVIEW (16vracer)

This advice may make things a HELL of a lot easier, and make things go a lot quicker:
See where the 'A' is labelled on the 2nd last picture? To the right of that (in the picture) is a plastic plastic circle with little groves on it (the tailing portion of part B)....and a little rod that is threaded. Take some white-out and mark where the threaded rod meets the plastic circle thingy. Do this for the rods entering parts A and B.
If you rotate the black circle thingy back, and pull it (towards the bottom of the picture) the spring will compress and you can pull the threaded rod out from the clip. Do this for both of the parts (A, and part B). This way, when you pull out the big metal counter-weight part, you will pull out parts A and B along with it.
You'll find it's 100% easier to take A and B off when the part is out of the car
