I just got my 4Motion front valence and I want to get it painted. I've called 10 different body shops in my area and they all stated that it couldn't be painted due to the texture of the valence. They mentioned that it wouldn't hold the paint very well. Any ideas? I love the way it looks when it's painted...

You just need to find a shop that will paint it, if they sand/prime it, it will work. Also, you should know that in that pic there that guy left the cut-outs black...it looks much different if you paint the entire piece.

Exactly... that's the way I prefer it done. I think the bottom cut-outs left black make it look complete. When it's all painted, I feel the valence get's lost. Thanks...

Just tell the body shop to do it and use a flex agent in the paint. That's what I had done and the paint's been holding up just fine, even after 2 years and something like 48000 miles. Here's my front valence as it is today:

Looks great... any sanding or did they just prime and paint? Did you just give them the valences or the whole car?

I just gave them the valences. No sanding.

my advice - if you have to tell the paint/body shop how to do something, take it to another shop. if they say they can't do it, it means to me that they are afraid they'll mess up which also says to me the don't trust their skills or the skill of their employees...

Most of the paint manufacturers make a high-build primer which helps to fill and smooth imperfections. It would probably work well on smoothing a rough surface like that. It would probably just involve alot of sanding.

I was thinking they didn't want to be held responsible if the paint didn't adhere properly.

Well, is common with not expert bodyshops
look bodyshop that use S T A N D O X products the best of the world
They have to painted...
S T A N D O X (German tech obviously) has a tecnology called
flexible paint or something like that... this kind of paint is for plastic pieces

Here in Mexico, we have a good bodyshops that work with STANDOX

Sand, prime, paint.... it'll hold up just fine. Just keep in mind that its more prone to scratching & chipping because of where it is on the car. Had mine done 2 years ago & aside from normal wear & tear its still a-ok. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I finally found a place that said it wouldn't be a problem and that I could just bring them the valences. They quotes me $275 for both of them... primed and painted. Seems like alot to me... am I wrong?

sounds like a lot to me ... the place i went to quoted me $150 for both valances and a rubstrip. he advised against painting the valances also, and since my car is black and it wouldn't make that much of a difference, i didn't paint them

now i'm having second thoughts
