I just got back from the VW dealer and here is how my day went...
My girlfriend and I drove some '02 New Beetle's (a Sport and a Turbo S) and then a '02 VR6 (200hp) GTI with the 6-speed. We liked the NB's, but fell in love with the GTI once we first got in. Amazing. The interior was excellent and it felt smooth when we drove it...not to mention when we pressed down on the gas. Nice! We decided then and there that a Beetle was out and it had to be a GTI and the VR6 topped the list.
We then started haggling and the dealer started at invoice + $500 (straight profit for him). I then told him about the $1250 cash that VW would give him to move this '02 off the lot and we started haggling about that. He told me that if I took the $1250 (which he was surprised I knew about) I couldn't get the low financing. The finance rate was 2.5% for 60-months W/O the cash and 5.5% WITH it, I believe. However, I have been planning to lease and the lease rate to finance was already at 5.5% so he said I could straight out have the $1250.
Basically, I can have the car for $750 under invoice. And that is with minimal haggling. If I want, I could probably knock his profit ($500) down some, but I think it's a fair deal for both sides so I don't know if I'll push my luck.
With that, we didn't close the deal. I'm going to think about it some more and figure out if this is the car I want for that much scratch. I also have to sell my truck first. The plan is to get the finance app. in and put a $100 deposit down on the car, which he said he can hold for a month for me while I try and sell my F-150. I had them appraise it for trade and it was laughable. So, that's where I'm at. Anyone want a nice Ford?
My girlfriend and I liked the NB and the 'S' was great...but we just fell in love with the GTI. It's a fantastic car.
