K04 on 2002 AWP?

Friend of mine has the idea of installing a K04 on his brand new 2002 AWP.
Would you guys do it?
From what I know, K04 wouldn't give much of a difference on an AWP ... correct me if I am wrong.

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

If you could get a good price on the k-04 and buy some k-04 softwar i would say you will have a nice edge over other chipped k-03 2002's.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

Yes about 15-20hp with the right software and alot more pull in the high rpms .Remember its not always about the peak horse power gain but were that peak happened and how long it lasts.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (20VsilvrGTI)

From what I know, you will gain around 15-20 on an AWD engine not on AWP???

No one else has any comments on this???

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

My opinion is that it's not worth it on an AWW, and it's marginal on an AWD considering all the kits coming out these days.

What's more to say? I don't think there is anyone here who has gone from an AWW ko3 to a ko4. Everybody speculates about minimal gains. Speculation being the key concept. Nothing proven. Besides, with no AWW specific ko4 software, the true potential of this combo would not be realized....oh well.....

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (tyrolkid)

if you want a direct bolt on I say K04. Otherwise a T3 setup should get MOST people to their desired goal.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

anyone think of turbo lag and less streetable?
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (scud6661)

The k-04 is about as streetable as it gets and will only lag a few hundred rpms more the a k-03.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (20VsilvrGTI)

I'll give you a comparison of spool up times when I get my T3 kit. The K04 just pulls harder up top. I'd be willing to think that the T3 might be close.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Bug_Power)

Would the K04 require a bigger intercooler? If so, that would certainly increase the cost of this upgrade substantially.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Bug_Power)

K04 does not require a bigget intercooler from what I know.
Thanks for all the input!
So what's the HP/Torque difference between the AWW/AWP K03 and the K04? 10HP?

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

Thanks senna for doing this for me

I am not yet completely convinced not to go with k04 eventually since I want to upgrade my GTI with vag oem parts (except the chip
). I understand that T3 would give me the most hp but It's not exactly a bolt on for our engine.Actually I would like to bring my gti to 2002 S3 performnace range (which sports k04) as I am not that interested In 12 sec 1/4 mile times although I give all the props to people who are after that. I simply would like to make my GTi kick ass streetable car that will give me a head rush every time I stomp on that pedal without compromising the ride quality.
Thanks to everybody for the imput though.

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

HP difference: I know DBJ (best k03 AWW I've heard of) got 213 to the wheels with intake and full exhaust. If anything, that is a little more than the 235 crank hp that AWE says the GIAC chip will give you. However, you may have more torque (?). That 235 is also without a full exhaust or intake so, yeah, the difference wouldn't be that much but I don't think anyone knows for sure (no dynos of a K04 AWD with exhaust and intake to compare). Either way, that is a reliable and easy upgrade for AWD's that will give you a slight advantage over AWW (with stock turbos and identical mods).
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

But I can never run 2.1 bar of boost through ko3 like he new s3 runs through ko4

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (G-Funk)

I never heard of 2.1 bar on a K04 ...

S3 has two intercoolers ? Maybe that's why?
Can someone confirm this?
To compare -> GIAC/UpSolute K04 chips ? 1.3 BAR?

Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (Senna 1.8T)

According to a local tuner the 2002 AWP has the K04 and a 4bar FPR stock.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (A-Money)

i believe its the KO3 housing with the KO4 turbine, personally i would rather go for a newer turbo from Garrett.
Re: K04 on 2002 AWP? (A-Money)

I wouldn't trust MY car in that local tuners hands

On another note - it all depends on how much money you have to spend and WHAT you have done to your car already. IF you already have a 3" DP - and you don't have more than $1K more to spend - K04 would be a good upgrade (that's my case) IF you have the money to spend on a new kit (>$2000) then T3 is a better option. When going to T3 turbo you have a lot of hidden costs. The turbo itself can be had for ~$450, then you have to buy a waste gate (internal +$150, external +250 or so) then you need an exhaust manifold ~$400, new Downpipe ~$250 and new cat (higher flowing one) ~$250, most likely new injectors would be in order ~$450 and finally a properly tuned software ($???) The cost adds up pretty quick. And that does NOT include upgrading your clutch and brakes (to match your newly found power) or suspension...
For me a K04 will do quite nicely right about now. If only their price wasn't so high...
