This might sound stupid, but does anyone know what the largest rims I could get for a Mk3 GTI - without rubbing, of course

By adding bigger size wheels you are actually RAISING the car stance,i spend most of my time on the Golf/Jetta 3 forums and have seen 19" wheels on both.
just think on how practicall will be to roll on 19",maybe you guys have silk asphalt road over there

One place to try is to use the Wheel & tire selector from Venom

IE. My stock GTI VR6 wheels
205 / 50 / 15 (tires)
15 x 6.5" ET 43 (Rims)
Will "fit"
225 / 40 / 16 (tires)
16 x 7.5" ET 35 (Rims)
