Just wondering for what you would get FIRST for an extra $1000 cost over a base Passat: leather OR sunroof? (for me I'd get the leather and forego the sunroof, but was wondering what everyone else's preference was?) Thks.
Do not make the same mistake I did when I bought my Passat. I settled for a car without the options I wanted and ended up adding them later anyway. If I were you I would get both a sunroof and leather. Negotiate with the dealer or whoever you are buying from and they will give you a deal I bet.
If I was in the show room again buying a Passat I would let the dealer know I am very interested in a car and let the dealer know what I want and how much I can spend. Tell them you will put money down now if they will include leather and sunroof. If they don't, put your check book away and walk out. I would be willing to bet money they will change their minds quickly about what they can give you. Especially in this economy!!!
Get both so you don't look back and say, I wish I would've......
Sunroof, alloys, and rear shade.
Alloys - give you a firmer ride, nice.
rear shade - keeps the sun off your back
sunroof - is the next best thing to a convertible without the hassels. There's nothing like an open air ride.
Leather - way cool and nice controls on the steering wheel and yeah those heated seats are nice in the winter. Depends on where you live if the cold weather pkg is interesting or not.
If I had to pick between the leather and the lux package, I'd get the leather.
Leather seats
Leather-wrapped steering wheel
cool cruise control and radio buttons on steering wheel
heated seats
I like the sunroof and rear sunshade but that would be second on my list
Only problem is if you don't get the luxury package then you don't get alloy wheels. The steelies look pretty cheap but if you are going to get wheels later anyway, then go for it.
Leather....Plus you get the leather steering wheel. Very comfy.
Then you can add 17" capezio's later and not have to listen to your sunroof rattling around....
Get both if you want both. The monthly cost difference on a lease probably won't break you. I don't really think VW designs the sunroof to rattle - mine doesn't. I can't imagine not having a sunroof, but it's your call.

down here in south TX, I'd get the sunroof.. Leather gets too hot and too cold at times... that and I don't want to slide in my seat as I am taking a fast turn
.
Now, if they offered A8 leather seats or sunroof, I'd take the seats!
LEATHER LEATHER LEATHER!!!
Leather rocks. Heated seats are nice and toasty. You can clean/condition leather easier than cloth. Leather is nice.
Sunroof:
(My) sunroof is noisy. Although I don't get the rattle some people complain about, it seems to let in a lot of wind noise when closed. This is remedied for the most part by closing the shade. Now I drive around with the shade closed all the time and realize I could have done without the sunroof.
Alloys:
buy aftermarket. I found a set of Audi A6 9-spoke wheels on ebay for $300, and they are great. My stock alloys are wrapped with snow tires (and are on the car now). I would not have minded at all (ok, maybe a little) if the snows dressed a set of steelies instead.
Rear Sun-shade:
Tint your windows. You will thank me later. However, even with tint the sunshade will still help the car keep its cool in the summer when left in the mall parking lot all day. Most of the time I don't use it though.
Get the luxury of leather and save your $$$ to buy some nice wheels!
Like almost everyone else, leather without a doubt.
Sunroof: more wind noise, potential for rattles, potential for leaks (if you keep the car lon enough), reduced structural rigidity,..., and why the #%$#^%#^ does one need a fifth window??
Aren't four enough?
Leather: looks nice, feels nice, leather wrapped steering wheel, and I think steering wheel radio controls. I would never do an aftermarket leather job on a car with side airbags.
caveat: If you still want alloys and would be happy with the stock wheels, then it might be more economical to get the alloys through the lux package. But if you are going to buy pergormance wheels, dump the lux package. Incidently, the 2002 steels have nice looking hubcaps and they are not any heavier than the 15" alloys (at least according to one memner who weighted them on his home bathroom scale
Sunroof. I've always had one and always will.
Sure there's wind noise when they're open, but a lot less than a convertible and a lot more practical. Don't know where you live, but to me it's worth it here in western NY just to be able to open and go cruisin' on the 1st warm, sunny Spring day every year.
I TOTALLY agree with him. Wait and get what you want. Or if you really cannot then I would get the Sunroof and add the leateher later because the cloth seats BITE!! I had them and I am a happy woman with the leather now.
